En Primeur | Domaine Louis Boillot
The 2020 vintage represents a new era for this highly respected domaine created by Louis, when he separated from his brother Pierre back in 2003. He moved his winemaking facilities to Chambolle Musigny where his partner Ghislaine Barthod is based. 2021 is the second vintage made entirely by Ghislaine and Louis’s 26-year-old son Clement, although I suspect there was still a watchful eye from his ever-proud parents. It reflects their confidence in his ability, that they should give him so much responsibility.
2021 Gevrey Chambertin Louis Boillot
£270.00 In Bond £340.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
This is a fine cuvée made from eight different parcels of Gevrey Chambertin that the domaine owns in the village. Characters of hedgerow and wild forest fruits. A bright and energetic style, a little less bold than some years, with more suave Chambolle typicity. Tremendously appealing, with a long, refined finish.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a light nose with crushed stone and airy red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame smoothly textured blueberry and dark cherries, though there is little grip on the finish. That said, it will provide pleasurable early drinking for several years. Drink 2024-2029

There is an overtly sauvage element to the ultra-fresh aromas of wild red cherry, raspberry and forest floor character. The rich, vibrant and detailed medium weight flavors possess just a bit more overall depth on the youthfully austere, balanced and sneaky long finish. This understated and very pretty effort should develop more richness with a few years of keeping. Drink 2028+

Cask sample. Juicy and easy – much more transparent than most. Long and fun. Drink 2025 – 2038

Greater depth of colour here, with a more reductive nose – nothing ugly or firmly entrenched. Vibrant vigorous red fruit, a little spicy and saline finish, stays lively and the fruit finishes by taking a more floral aspect. Quite good persistence. Drink from 2025-2029.

From three separate parcels of vines, this is a very striking wine. A touch of smoky oak and vanilla on the nose. The palate shows off superb red and crystalline fruit characters. Bright and lively with a fresh, confident finish.

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village shows a mixture of blueberry and strawberry fruit on the nose, pure and nicely defined, though just missing a bit of terroir expression. The palate was just a bit gassy during my visit, but there are pretty, simple cassis and strawberry fruits in situ. It's just a bit abrupt on the finish. Drink 2024-2030.

Once again, the expressive nose is exceptionally pretty with its array of rose petal, exotic spice and layered crushed red berry nuances. I very much like the mid-palate texture of the barely middleweight flavors that contrasts somewhat with a lingering finish where a touch of asperity slowly emerges. Drink 2027+

A pretty fresh purple, charming if on the light side. Then builds attractively on the palate in this light red fruit style, with charm and Chambolle grace, though not especially deep of course. Slightly acidulated red berries. Drink from 2025-2028.
2021 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets Louis Boillot
£0 - £0 In Bond-
Goedhuis, December 2022
Champonnets is superbly positioned between the lower slopes of the Combe St Jacques and the heartland of Gevrey’s Grands Crus vineyards. Shining brick red colour, this is a vibrant and fresh wine, full of cherry and cranberry. The tannins are so fine, there is so much elegance to this wine and the bite of crunchy freshness enlivens the palate on the finish.

Burghound, January 2023, Score: 90-92
This is aromatically similar to the Evocelles though the fruit is a bit more deeply pitched as it includes hints of dark currant and plum. The delicious and tension filled flavors are also on the lighter side, and particularly so for what is typical for Champonnets, all wrapped in an impressively persistent, youthfully austere and beautifully delineated finish. This could use better depth but it’s already quite pretty. Drink 2029+

A bigger crop in 2021 than ‘22 because of hail the following year. A lighter colour, slightly evolved even, with a full flush of soft strawberry fruit A delightful lighter but fine red fruit on the palate, a drier note at the finish as one or two tannins express themselves, then an attractive long finish. Elegant. Drink from 2026-2031.
