En Primeur | Domaine Louis Boillot

The 2020 vintage represents a new era for this highly respected domaine created by Louis, when he separated from his brother Pierre back in 2003. He moved his winemaking facilities to Chambolle Musigny where his partner Ghislaine Barthod is based. 2020 is the first vintage made entirely by Ghislaine and Louis’s 26-year-old son Clement, although I suspect there was still a watchful eye from his ever-proud parents. It reflects their confidence in his ability, that they should give him so much responsibility. Tasting the wines, it is clear their faith has been fully rewarded.

Clement continues the family style, favouring early picking starting on 18th August and a desire for lower alcohol wines to show off the purity of Pinot Noir. He de-stalks the fruit 100% followed by a cool maceration to stabilise fruit colour and aromatics, prior to the fermentation starting at slow and gentle temperatures. These have superb brightness and freshness, and fine vineyard identity.

We’re limiting purchases to 1 or 2 cases per wine due to high demand. Please contact your account manager or wine@goedhuis.com to discuss larger quantities.

This is a fine cuvée made from the eight different parcels of Gevrey Chambertin that the domaine owns in the village. Enticing loganberry and blueberry fruits, this shows off the warmth of the summer, balancing its ripe fruit with a vibrant freshness from their early picking policy. Sweet and full of vitality, with a soothing finish.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red fruit with a touch of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, lower in acidity than maybe other cuvées though the fleshiness on the finish is appealing. Quite pure too. Drink 2024 - 2034

Medium deep purple, the nose is not as sensual as chez Ghislaine Barthod. But then more starts to come out. Plenty of ripe raspberry and just a slightly drier finish.

From three separate parcels of vines, this is a tighter, firmer Chambolle. Fresh red berries, with some sweet syrup of cherry notes. Packed with bright, fresh fruit, this very pure with intense focused Pinot flavours.

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 87-90

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a light bouquet, a little tertiary in style, perhaps just calling out for more fruité. The palate is saline on the entry, nicely structured and actually showing more potential than the aromatics thanks ot the fine precision on the finish. Drink 2024 - 2035

This vineyard is tucked away in the very farthest northwest part of Gevrey and enjoys the cooling influence of its 350m elevation in warm summers, so it was ideally suited to the 2020 vintage. Full of wild berry and autumnal fruit flavours, this has excellent clarity of fruit and a bright freshness showing off the benefits of its higher location. The rounded but firm tannins give the wine both presence and complexity.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has a nose where you might misconstrue contains some stems - there are none, it is just very peppery. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy red berry fruit, fine acidity, just a little coarsness on the finish that should be remedied during its élevage. Fine. Drink 2024 - 2036

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2021,

Bright ripe deep purple. A light reduction on the nose. Dark fruit, quite structured here, not cooked. Black cherry with a fresher thread behind, quite juicy, quite complex, and with good persistence.

Champonnets is superbly positioned between the lower slopes of the Combe St Jacques and the heartland of Gevrey’s Grands Crus vineyards. Full of Black Forest fruits, coffee bean and some oriental spice. A sweet intensity is kept in balance by a tensile structure and fresh mineral edge. High quality and ageworthy.

    Neal Martin, December 2021,

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru, which suffered a lot of millerandage this vintage, is very elegant on the nose with rose petal infused red fruit that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite saline, lovely build in the mouth towards a precise and persistent finish. Excellent! Drink 2025 - 2045

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2021,

Rich bright purple, a little bit of oak showing. Plenty of fruit up front, this expands beautifully across the palate in that blend of fresh cherry, ripe raspberry and light pepperiness which is typical here this year. Fine tannins and long finish.
