En Primeur | Domaine Justin Girardin
The Girardin family and their delightful wines embody the values of a classic Burgundian domaine. The family history dates to 1570 and their vineyard holding of 17 hectares represents a sizeable estate in Burgundian terms. The young and extremely talented Justin, now in his early 30s, assumed total control in 2015 but he is happy to say that he is ably supported by his mother Valérie and father Jacques. This was brought home to us this autumn when we enjoyed a delightful post-Covid dinner with them; it really was a happy occasion highlighting the close-knit family unit, and their wines have very much the same feel.
2020 Santenay Rouge 1er Cru Clos Rousseau Justin Girardin
£120.00 In Bond £160.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2021
Sitting on the southern boundary of the appellation, Justin commented that Clos Rousseau’s naturally cooler location certainly aided the Pinot Noir this year. A very deep dark colour, with a melody of rich wild summer fruits. A more intense and dense style than some years, but deliciously rich, very full, long and sweet on the finish.

Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-91
From four plots, Fourneaux, Petit Clos Rousseau and two in Grand Clos Rousseau. Medium to full purple. The bouquet is a little more accessible than Maladière, but growing in density. The ripeness is more evident, this is quite similar to Beauregard in that regard, with some cherry and ripe raspberry. Medium plus length and a little fresher to the finish.
2020 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Justin Girardin
£225.00 In Bond £286.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2021
A characteristic example of the broad, ripe fruited flavoured wines that this excellent 1er Cru produces. With striking characters of freshly buttered warm toast, this has noticeable generosity of fruit in a very giving way. The smoky, nutty almond flavours give further nuance on the finish.

From Clos Chareau, 13.6% alcohol. Pale lemon, with a toasty note more than reduction. There is a fair depth of fruit here, without losing Justin’s liveliness of style, good acidity, some wood tannins. No more than medium bodied, but attractive.
