En Primeur | Domaine Jean-Philippe Fichet

Jean-Philippe was just 20 when his father handed down the family’s sharecropping arrangements in the village of Meursault. In the intervening 40 years Jean-Philippe has lost none of his enthusiasm nor his thirst for knowledge. As a young winemaker he espoused the then fashion for new oak and frequent bâtonnage in cask, making full and hedonistic wines. Today the estate’s style is more reflective. Jean-Philippe believes the origins of great wine are first and foremost in the vineyard. His motto is to respect the soil and the vine, treating only when necessary. Earlier picking dates deliver a stunning mineral freshness. In the winery he operates a much gentler handling process than in his youth. Larger casks and less new oak mean the wines possess superb fruit content.

Jean-Philippe was hugely excited to show us his wonderful selection from the 2020 vintage; it was a welcome distraction from the year he has had in 2021. The 2021 April frosts were devastating, impacting his production in Meursault by as much as 80%. A normal harvest in Meursault Les Chevalières would give him 22 casks, in 2021 he has made just 4. But this Spring he also had a horrific fire that ripped through his cellar in the early hours of the morning. It was only thanks to the swift actions of the local baker spotting the smoke coming from the roof and calling the fire brigade, that not only saved his cellars but also his entire 2020 crop. He loves this vintage, which he describes as having the richness of 2018 with the bite of 2017 and showing off the finest characteristics of great Meursault, the perfect amount of plump ripe fruit, beautifully balanced by lively, fresh acidity.

The dominant force in this exceptional Bourgogne Blanc comes from the Les Palland vineyard close to Puligny planted between 1945 and 1950. A beautiful expression of Côte de Beaune fruit, attractively scented with warm fresh croissant aromas. This is a very layered wine, with characters of vanilla and cream, and an energetic finish of fresh lemon sherbet.

This is a pretty little wine with loads of energy and flair, and it looks every inch a mini-Meursault given its fruit integrity and balance. Just about drinking and rather juicy and clean, this is a perfect white for drinking from 2023 – 2025.

From Pellands and Millerands, excellent sites which in another village would doubtless be classified at village level. Fine classy bouquet after a pale colour. This has a really impressive mineral thread running through the substantial weight of fruit, juicy and fresh at the same time. Fichet followers will love his 2020 BBVV! 5 star wine

A superb expression of Meursault coming from 5 different vineyard plots in different locations, aspects, and soil types across the appellation. With a touch of freshly buttered toast on the nose, it combines a velvet-like texture due to its creamy volume with a bite of mineral tension as it evolves on the palate. Good length and attractively forward for early drinking.

A pale green tint here in the colour. This is in a leaner, classically Fichet style. Very precise, intense flavours, some greengage fruit. Some weight at the back of course. More perfumed tasted from a second tank.

A very central lieu dit close to the village below the town hall. West facing and shaded in the morning it makes the most of the afternoon sun and achieves perfect ripeness. An initial array of citrus fruits, from lemon peel to clementine, and Pink Lady apples which then give way as the weight of dry matter develops and characters of almond and nutmeg evolve. Naturally rich and superbly long.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,

This is more like it, with a grip and length that runs on nicely and keeps its fruit and juiciness underpinned with crisp acidity throughout. Well-made and clean and also classically dimensioned, this is a lovely Meix and a wine that will drink nicely from the off but hold longer than expected, too.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Pale to mid lemon. A certain toast on the nose from this richer soil site. Some peachy notes through the middle, a little drier at the finish. A plumper style of Meursault than the Fichet norm, attractive without hitting the heights of class.

The oldest vineyards on the estate planted back in 1928 by Jean-Philippe’s grandfather, so this is unsurprisingly a deeply intense cuvée. This is an eye-catching style with its perfume of warm baguette, apricots and quince. Strikingly controlled, it balances its exuberance of flavours of fresh toffee and caramel with a bite of freshness and long continuous finish.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 18+

Les Gruyaches builds on a firm base of fruit and stays on the more masculine side of the fence with fairly powerful fruit notes and not as many floral details as were found on the Meix. This is a nice wine with great value to be found if you are a fan of slightly more commanding Meursault. It will need a year or two for the oak to melt away, but this is a smart wine and a cunning buy.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Mid lemon colour. Heavenly bouquet, the vintage seems to suit the ancient vines of Gruyaches. There is a depth of fruit emerging on the nose, ripe plum fruit, nothing honeyed, good acidity behind, intensity builds at the back of the palate, lemon scented but these are properly ripe lemons. Very persistent

Jean-Philippe always serves this wine with a twinkle in his eye, if pushed he would probably say it is his favourite cuvée. In his words it is always supple, racy and elegant. A melange of stone fruits, peaches and apricots, it was an absolute star when we tasted in October. Buttery and generous, but with huge finesse, excitingly the flavours linger for an eternity. Quite lovely.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,

Excellent! Les Chevalières manages to combine the best traits from each of the previous wines and bring them together in one bottle. There is beauty here and also great tension. This is a more closed wine than the predecessors, but it is still possible to see the layers and the calibre of fruit in this glorious wine!

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Mid lemon colour with a fresh green lining. Very clear, very pure, delicious white fruit. Frankly, this is gorgeous in its hillside style, rather than butter and hazelnuts. Enough flesh so it is not just about mineral tension, and very long indeed.

The elder statesmen in the village very much consider this fine vineyard a 1er Cru equivalent. It is only due to a quirk of history and appellational bureaucracy that it isn’t. A slightly more extravagant style of wine than its near neighbour, the Chevalières. Characters of brioche and warm buttered croissant, this is all on harmony and joy. It just excites throughout its time in the palate, layered, full and a perfectly complete example of fine Meursault.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 90-93

A little more colour here, normal for Tesson compared to Chevalières, and a slightly softer nose, a little more in yellow fruit. Very good tension through the middle, nonetheless, builds to the back, with fair persistence.

Puligny Montrachet’s last 1er Cru before you arrive in the commune of Meursault. Its clay and marl soils are more akin to its neighbour and therefore makes a bolder style of Puligny, whilst retaining a purity and citrus zest. Very direct, with driven intensity of fruit, it starts hugely powerful and then its gracious elegance and tenderness make for a wonderfully ethereal wine. Glorious in every way.

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,

This is a wonderful wine that shows balance and harmony and a fair amount of beauty, too. I often feel that Fichet falls short of managing to embody the excellence found in his portfolio of Meursaults in this Puligny, but in 2020 he did this and more. This is a fabulous Referts and one which sings.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Fresh pale colour, the nose is quite distinguished in a white fruit style. Quite complex with a little bit of toasting, pure white fruit, finishes with a little bit of pleasing sucrosity.
