En Primeur | Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot

Bearing the name of founder Jean-Marc, this domaine is now managed by his daughter Lydie and husband François. This outstanding estate owes its origin to an inheritance from Jean-Marc’s grandfather, Etienne Sauzet. Jean-Marc learnt his trade as the Sauzet winemaker before setting up his own 11-hectare domaine with some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. More recently they have purchased a further 10 hectares in the Mâconnais. Their vinification process is designed to express the purity of Puligny fruit: a short cold settling of 24 hours follows pressing, followed by 11 months élevage with a weekly bâtonnage before bottling.

August harvests are becoming increasingly commonplace for the white vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. As Lydie points out, this is not the impact of summer heat (which it was in 2003) but rather the changes that are taking place in seasonal weather. The Boillot’s harvest this year started on 20th August, the result of an extraordinarily advanced budding in Puligny, bringing forward their flowering by almost a month when it started on 10th May. The dry summer months meant that the vineyards through this period were disease free. The spurt of rainfall in early August refreshed the vines and helped to swell the berries in advance of a fine and healthy harvest. In 2020 good yields are the vintage’s saviour; it balances the intensity of richness, meaning that the wines are not fat in any way, and are able to show some excellent pedigree. The estate’s Pulignys show a healthy balance between appealing honeyed fruit characters and bright pure minerality. This is a wonderfully complete range from this fine estate.

Honeyed, lacelike and harmonious, everything a classic Puligny Montrachet should be. This is a combination of graceful charm and sparkling energy. With flavours of mandarin and jasmine, this is redolent of the English summer. A beautifully approachable wine in an early drinking style.

Superb and ultra-refined, this is a stand-out village Puligny with delicious, lip-smacking fruit countered by nervy acidity and freshness. While this threatens to be a forward-drinker, there is a lot of fruit at the back of the palate which has not yet been allowed to reveal itself and so even though this wine looks terrific already there is more to come!

Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet is immediately present, some fresh herbs as much as flowers, fresh apple too, this is quite austere up front, but with much more weight behind waiting to emerge. This is looking backward at the moment, but I expect it to blossom in the bottle.

Always very open in its youth with a childlike energy and enthusiasm. Striking characters of crème caramel, white nectarine and honeysuckle. Full and juicy in the mouth with a glycerol and silk-like texture, so graceful and already irresistible even when so young.

Fine pale lemon and lime. This is very classy on the nose, less sun-drenched than Garenne. Ripe lemon notes, quality white fruit behind, a fresh crystalline finish, then the fruit returns behind. There is a lot going on here. Very persistent.

Sadly, not a single bottle being of this cuvée is being made in 2021 following the spring frost, so we can be thankful that the 2020 is a stunning cuvée from this high-altitude vineyard by the hamlet of Blagny. A mix of lemon sherbet, hazelnuts, and caramel crunch. Multifaceted in nature, with a menacingly deep structure, it has great purity of flavours and the spicey richness at the end sits perfectly alongside a feeling of freshly squeezed lemon and zest. A class act.

Pale lemon colour. Very interesting nose with plenty of energy here, offering some underlying opulence and a little hint of menthol, fills out the mid palate very well, and with some generosity at the finish.

A lower lying 1er Cru in Puligny with a combination of clay and rocky, stony soil structure. This wine always has a degree of boldness. The initial mineral bite gives way to a fullness of deep firm yellow fruits and flavours of freshly baked pastries. With a touch of cinnamon and spice, this is warming and rich with a feeling of tannic structure and the lovely finish of roasted hazelnuts, gives both persistence and complexity.

Pale lemon colour. There is a certain ripe opulence to the nose, but this holds together extremely well on the palate, with a fine thread of citrus preventing it becoming too heady. Concentrated and tense.

If you own a bit of Combettes, you count your blessings for this is a favourite 1er Cru amongst the senior members of the village. Sensations of newly picked oranges and autumnal pears, this is so layered, starting with honey and a kiss of toasted oak. This wines overall substance and weight hides under the firework of flavour sensations, from cashew, cream and toffee. All so rewarding and there is a great lift of saline energy on the end.

Pale primrose. A fine bouquet with some complexity, fruit as white as it is yellow, this has really maintained its grip though the fruit is at its fleshiest here, quite a long finish. Does it have quite the nervous intensity at the back? That is not really what Combettes is about. Fruit marries well with the oak here, a delicious and fairly accessible Combettes.
