En Primeur | Domaine Geantet-Pansiot

Taking its name from founders Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot back in 1954, this domaine has grown from 7 to 22 hectares under the direction of their son Vincent Geantet and his children Fabien and Emilie. Having outgrown their historical cellars, they invested in a new winery, and their wines show all the advantages that this additional space provides. Traditionally, they de-stem 100% of their fruit and allow the must a few days of cool maceration prior to fermentation starting, which enhances the colour and aromatic content of their wines.

The grapes for this cuvée were the last to be harvested, some 15 days after Fabien started picking on 5th September. This wine expresses the vibrant freshness one expects from the higher slopes of the Côte de Nuits, with charming raspberry and strawberry fruit flavours and a gentle alcohol level of 13%.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 86-88

There is enough reduction present to push the fruit to the background. More interesting are the racy and delicious middleweight flavors that retain good detail and a subtle minerality on the dusty, inviting and refreshing finish. This should be approachable young after 2 to 3 years of keeping. Drinking 2025+.

The Côte de Nuits’ most northerly appellation, Marsannay produces red wines with a fine mineral purity that mature a little ahead of its neighbours in Gevrey Chambertin. An intense and firmly structured wine, with plum and savoury flavours. Very good substance and subtle, with a smoky, toasted character on the finish.

This prominent and steep vineyard produces a Marsannay with great charm and, in terms of drinking, it is always very approachable in nature. Characterised by spice, vanilla, and dark fruits, the tannins have an earthy dimension, giving body behind the open richness of fruit.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 88-91

A fresh, cool and airy nose also reflects a variety of red berry scents though with less prominent earth and floral influences. There is markedly more minerality suffusing the beautifully detailed and notably finer medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a dusty, youthfully austere and balanced finale. Some patience needed. Drinking 2027+.

The domaine has an expanse of 3 hectares, covering 17 different parcels all of which are reaching 75 years old. An exuberant and lush village cuvée, the open summer pudding fruit flavours leap from the glass. Ample and opulent on first sip, it finishes with a lovely combination of both freshness and sweetness.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 90-92

Here too there is enough wood to notice on the array of poached plum, black cherry and forest floor aromas. The very suave, indeed almost plush, medium weight flavors exhibit outstanding power and drive on the rustic, robust and compact finale. This is a classic Gevrey villages that delivers first-rate quality. Recommended. Drinking 2034+.

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2024, Score: 18

There is much more grip here than I expected, but I ought not to have doubted this wine because I have followed it for decades, and it has never let the side down. These old vines seem not to have panicked in 2022 and harnessed the qualities of the vintage (the sun!) and the deeper sub-terranean elements that are critical when making a properly balanced wine. In the greater scheme of things, £65, by comparison to bootfulls of red Bordeaux or Champagne, to pick a few obvious targets, looks like money well spent, not least because this wine will easily reach five years and, most probably ten.

This is a highly respected lieu-dit, at the northern end of the village sitting just below Premier Cru Champeaux. The vines are now 120 years old, having been planted in 1903. A fuller and more layered style than the Vieilles Vignes, this is a wine with a little more stature and presence. Dark Black Forest fruit flavours, smoky, liquorice richness, this deep and intense with a very long finish.

Highlighting the quality of the old vines and their ability to overcome any challenges from the drier summer conditions, Fabien ages this cuvee in 50% new oak. Spiced dark berry flavours, a warm and rich style, with a body framed by rounded tannins, sweet and lingering on the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 89-91

A cool and airy essence of red cherry is laced with subtle floral and spice nuances, especially anise. The succulent and refined middleweight flavors possess a satiny mouthfeel and ample minerality that surfaces on the sneaky long and youthfully austere finish where a lovely touch of salinity adds to the overall appeal. This is lovely and worth checking out plus it should age gracefully. Drinking 2030+.

This cuvée is named after Vincent Geantet’s father who founded the domaine in 1955. Breaking away from the domaine’s traditional style, Fabien uses whole bunch fermentation, just as his grandfather would have done in his day to create a structured, firm Gevrey Chambertin. Aromas of cinnamon and wild alpine fruits, the tannins have a granular presence giving an impression of excellent pedigree. This will benefit from a year or two in bottle.
