En Primeur | Domaine de l'Arlot
Domaine de l’Arlot has been owned by AXA Millésimes since 1987 and is currently under the direction of Englishman Christian Seely, who also has responsibility for their Bordeaux estates Ch Pichon Baron in Pauillac, Ch Suduiraut in Sauternes and Port house Quinta do Noval. In 2014 he appointed wine maker Geraldine Godot as technical director to manage this fine 14-hectare estate, which includes two famous monopole vineyards in Nuits St Georges on the most southern boundary of the Côte de Nuits.

Situated opposite the Clos de L’Arlot, this is a northerly exposed vineyard producing a bright and racy white wine with scents of fresh lime, grapefruit and lemon sherbet. Bottled just after the harvest following 10 months barrel aging, which gives a veneer of walnut and almond on the finish.

Returning after being frosted in 2021, the 2022 Côte de Nuits Blanc Villages Au Leurey, which had already been bottled, has a tightly wound bouquet with Conference pear, red apples and light frangipane scents loitering in the wings. Fine delineation, though not powerful. The palate is well-balanced with a taut line of acidity. There’s more tension than the Le Mont Blanc, with a twist of bitter lemon enlivening the finish. Give this a year in bottle if you can. A fine comeback. Drinking Window: 2024-2030.

Frosted out in 2021, welcome back. A little white fruit, nicely strict but with good intensity. Fine length, and the fruit is well supported by a little barrel. No new wood. Drink from 2025-2027.

These vines are in the small commune of Comblanchien, lying between Nuits St Georges and Ladoix-Serrigny, but this wine has the presence of a Nuits St Georges. A plush and joyous wine, with flavours of sweet, juicy raspberry, it is a symphony of Pinot charm. Soft tannins and very rounded on the finish. Lovely.

The 2022 Côte de Nuits Village Clos du Chapeau is the one cuvée that I felt flirted with a little sur-maturité on the nose: touches of hickory and dates filtering through the red plummy fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a powerful entry, a little more savory in style compared to its peers. Touches of black truffle and cracked black pepper show up towards the finish, showing some sinew. Afford this a couple of years in bottle. Maybe just missing the grace of their cuvées emanating from the Hautes-Côtes. Drinking Window: 2024-2032.

In bottle. Mid crimson colour. The bouquet shows a little more fruit ripeness than Le Mont. Not so much detail. Quite firm on the palate, with a more rigid structure, a fair volume of fruit, but on the discreet side today. Drink from 2025-2028.

Formerly known as Petit Arlot, these vines are now over 25 years old and the domaine has created a new label reflecting its Premier Cru status: Mont des Oiseaux, named after the old track which overlooks the quarry of the Clos. Sitting at the top of the Arlot Clos on limestone soil, this is a different style to the marl-based Clos wine. Bright and lively red fruit fragrance, this focuses on clarity and purity, with a crystalline fruit sweetness, a harmonious tannic core and subtle and appealing length on the finish.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Mont des Oiseaux 1er Cru was raised in 35% new oak and taken from barrel. The nose demonstrated a slight reduction, though attractive cranberry and wild strawberry fruit are already in place. The medium-bodied palate offers dark berry fruit laced with blood orange and a touch of clove. Quite citrus-fresh towards the well-structured finish. There is ample depth here, and the oak allows the terroir to shine. Very fine. Drinking Window: 2026-2038.

Top part of the Clos de l’Arlot on white limestone, younger clonal vines. A pretty mid purple, what seems to be an iron rich note on the nose, though it is not that. A stony touch too. This is elegant, medium bodied, indeed seems light at first until there is a burst of fruit towards the back. Good crisp acidity to finish along with an attractive red fruit perfume. Drink from 2028-2034.
