En Primeur | Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The delightful château and its gardens designed by Le Nôtre are a beautiful backdrop for this historic estate, which has been in Nicolay family ownership since 1834. The wines, like the property, have an extraordinary elegance and poise to them. They are impressive without excess. The family can be rightly proud of being one of the frontrunners practicing organic farming from the early 1990s and, since 2005, they have moved across to biodynamic viticulture.

Coming from the clay limestone soils of Pernand Vergelesses, this is a white wine which is always very floral in nature, balancing a creamy richness with a fresh chalky minerality.

This is a fascinating white wine coming from two plots, one in Corton Bessandes and the other in Corton Chaumes below Charlemagne. Owing to a lack of Pinot vines at the nursery back in the 1970s, Corton Chaumes was planted with Chardonnay, and so a star was born. Coming from red soil, this is always quite a structured white wine, depth and profound earthy complexity.

In Claude’s words, this is a “super village”, as it is a blend of part village Fournaux and part Premier Cru of the same name. Radiant scarlet colour, an array of bramble fruits, damson and sloe. A layered texture from the 100% whole bunch fruit, giving a fine tannic undertone, soft but lively on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 90-92

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux is a blend of Village and Premier Cru parcels with the oldest vines planted in 1956 from a selection massale from Tollot-Beaut. It has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with plenty of fruit: blueberry and wild strawberry, a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly-spiced entry, white pepper and clove infusing the dark berry fruit with a sweet, slightly candied finish. Delicious. Drinking Window: 2025-2035.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 87-89

Two thirds of the holding is 1er cru, vinified separately from the village part but then assembled when barrelled down. All has been vinified as whole bunches except a plot of young vines. Racked once after malolactic, not since. Rich purple colour, very exuberant but rather a raspberry and strawberry jam in style. I picked out a little warmth at the finish though with good acidity. 13.4% Drink from 2026-2031.

  • WK, January 2024, Score: 90-92

Deriving from a single 2.10-hectare parcel, some two thirds of which are classified as premier cru and which were formerly vinified and sold separately, the 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux offers up aromas of cherries, sweet raspberries and plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety palate that's rich and seamless, with a broad, licorice-inflected finish.

Following the devastating impact of the 2021 frost, when the domaine produced no Vergelesses, it is fabulous to reintroduce this fine example from the slopes of Pernand. Wild strawberry compote scent and flavours, the tannins have a characterful terroir edge with a granular subtlety. Good poise and tension on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 89-91

Not yet racked. An even medium deep purple. A very elegant floral, rose petal nose with some pleasing light fresh raspberry beneath. Then an extra burst of bright raspberry and cherry fruit on the palate with a little sucrosity, with the cherries reappearing after the light tannins. 13.9% Drink from 2027-2033.

This fine vineyard was planted in 1956 and the domaine has a peach of a location mid-slope, facing south and southeast. This was one of the earlier bottlings at the domaine immediately after the 2023 harvest, as Claude was keen to capture the brilliant, youthful fruit. Red cherry and a touch of bitter chocolate, combining sweetness and fresh fruit tension. This is a delicious cuvée from one of Savigny’s finest Premiers Crus.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 92

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru was bottled the week prior to my visit. This comes from more limestone soils with a light clay topsoil. The lively bouquet has plenty of energy, with crushed stone infusing the red berry fruit, touches of briar and pottery wheel. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. Crunchy black fruit laced with graphite leads to quite a precise, persistent, classically-styled Savigny finish. Not suave or sophisticated, yet surfeit with character. Drinking Window: 2026-2040.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 90-92

This south-facing, early ripening site has delivered a rather rich 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières. It offers up aromas of cherries, raspberries, violets and licorice followed by a broad, fleshy, medium to full-bodied palate.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 89

In bottle. A fine bright mid purple. The nose is exquisitely floral, and seems much more refreshing than the Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux. There is a lot of wine here, some slightly astringent tannins which will assist the wine in its ageing. A fine stylish finish. Drink from 2027-2033.

This 3-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Dark Morello cherry colour, this is a tight and compact wine, with abundant dark berry fruits. Multilayered with a rewarding sweetness on the finish thanks to enticing flavours of mocha and spice.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru came directly from a barrel that had not been racked. This explains why it is quite backward on the nose, with touches of blackberry and bilberry, quite a heightened marine influence, and hints of oyster shell coming through with time. The medium-bodied palate has impressive volume and fine tannins, a little fleshier than Chandon des Briailles' other cuvées with a bright, slightly peppery finish. This is contemporary Pernand firing on all cylinders. Drinking Window: 2026-2024.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 91-93

Still in barrel, unracked. The holding, three hectares planted to pinot, consists of one hectare of old vines from 1961, the rest mostly 30 to 40 years old. There is a little more density to the colour, and certainly a most profound bouquet which shows more classical fruit and less the effects of vinifying with whole bunches. 15% new wood shows a little in its extreme youth. A spicy dark fruited finish. Very good. Drink from 2028-2037.

  • WK, January 2024, Score: 92-94

Always the insider's choice at this address, the 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries and plums mingled with rose petals and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit that nicely cloaks its fine but chalky structuring tannins, it exhibits excellent potential.

The Maréchaudes vineyard sits just below Corton Bressandes. This wine is always very expressive in its youth, and 2022 is no exception: the depth and richness of fruit allowed Claude to use a little more new oak this year during the élevage, enhancing the wine’s generosity. There is power, depth and great persistence on the finish thanks to the combination of iron oxide and clay soils. Superb.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2022 Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru perhaps reveals the whole bunches more than other cuvées, with the most transparent and ephemeral red cherry and raspberry fruit scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious and smooth. This is a more elegant, refined Corton Grand Cru that should drink after just three or four years. Drinking Window: 2026-2042.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 92-94

Racked last week. Mid crimson purple in colour. The bouquet is quite expressive despite the recent racking, both strawberries and raspberries, perhaps a little dissociated at the moment, with an elegance though and a fine lifted finish. A little iron rich note in the middle. This is likely to gain in coherence from here and the finish is certainly both fine and persistent. Drink from 2029-2038.

  • WK, January 2024, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru has turned out especially well, retaining a cooler feel in this warmer vintage. Offering up aromas of plums and cherries mingled with tones of peonies, licorice and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep, vibrant core of fruit and a polished, harmonious profile.

At 300 metres this steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne is the highest in altitude, facing east and containing a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. Claude describes this as the most “aristocratic wine” in their portfolio. Quite a showy style this year, floral rose petal and plum perfume. This is suave and silky in the palate, with flavours of glacé cherry and damson and a long, composed mineral character on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2022 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru comes from limestone soils, white marn andsand, essentially a Charlemagne in red. The very expressive boquet lives up to its name; there is real nobility and finesse here, more red than black character with pressed rose petals coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite stony in character. It's not austere but has a long sustain on the aftertaste. Drinking Window: 2027-2045.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 93-95

Old vines from 1962 which yielded just 26 hl/ha. A bright mid crimson ruby, with a particularly floral nose. The fruit is fine-boned with a pleasing delicacy. Not as obviously complete as the Bressandes, but the detail is fine and fairly persistent, with little wild strawberry notes through to the back. Silky. Important not to search for power here, suggests Claude. This Clos du Roi will need time. Drink from 2032-2040.

  • WK, January 2024, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is a strong performance, delivering aromas of plums, sweet red fruit compote, rose petals, licorice and beetroot, followed by a full-bodied, layered and velvety palate that's rich and concentrated, with a stronger mineral undercurrent than the Corton-Bressandes, concluding with a gently tannic finish.

The fruit for this high-class Grand Cru comes from four sources; two by Ladoix with a high clay content, and two in Aloxe Corton which boast a little more limestone. This is a confident wine, showing off its Grand Cru pedigree. Fresh strawberry jam and menthol scent, ample and deliciously full in the palate with an excellent harmony of rounded tannins. The life and energy from the limestone buoys up the finish perfectly.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2022 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru comes from 1.5 hectares split over four parcels on different terroirs: two parcels in a former quarry with shallow soils in Aloxe-Corton and two from rich deep and ferrous soils towards Ladoix. The refined bouquet opens gradually in the glass: dark berry fruit, pressed iris flower, girolles and a touch of licorice. The medium-bodied palate has very fine tannins. It’s gentle and caressing in the mouth, gradually building towards a disarmingly pure finish, a touch of white pepper on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Drinking Window: 2027-2045.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 92-94

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of red berries, orange zest, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2022 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is full-bodied, fleshy and ample, with a sweet, layered core of fruit framed by supple, powdery tannins. Rich but lively, it concludes with a long and expansive finish. The blue marls of this terroir seem to have held up well in the heat.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 94-96

Four plots, two on the Aloxe side where the limestone is close to the surface, and two on richer, deeper soil towards Ladoix. A rich powerful purple, unracked. Little wild berries. This is perfectly balanced in every dimension. It has tasted well since the beginning says Claude, and I certainly think so on today's showing. A really fine finish with a plumpness to the fruit and a fine fresh feel. Top Corton! Drink from 2030-2038.
