En Primeur | Domaine Anne-Francoise Gros

In 1998 the marriage of François Parent and Anne-Françoise Gros combined two family dynasties. The Parent domaine of Pommard and the Gros family estates in Vosne Romanée created this superb ten-hectare estate under the AF Gros label, comprising some of the finest terroirs across the Côte d’Or. Today the domaine is in the very secure hands of their two children: Caroline runs the commercial side and Mathias is responsible for the vineyards and winemaking. Mathias is very much one of the new generation, following organic practices and minimal intervention during the winemaking process.

Mathias explained that the exceptional fruit quality in 2020 allowed him to increase the proportion of whole bunches used in the vinification this year: between 30-40% for the Vosne Romanée Grands Crus and Pommard 1ers Crus. However, given the superb levels of richness and concentration that already exist in their fruit, they avoided punching down the fruit (pigeage) during the fermentations, to maintain a balance between the fruit and tannic depth. These 2020s are a roll call of high quality.

These vines are in a higher altitude location in the Hautes Côtes above Nuits St Georges. It is a naturally cooler site and has excelled in 2020. Very bright, energetic red cherry fruit flavours, an exciting purity, good tannic grip with a lovely bite and lift on the finish.

Excellent medium deep purple with a pinkish tinge. The aromatics are beautiful here, with a depth of flavour unusual in Hautes Côtes. Dark raspberry with fresher notes, loganberry perhaps, good grip behind and fair length. Well done.

Citrus lime colour, very floral aromatics, with rose petal, camomile, and striking yellow fruit and satsuma flavours. An easy forward drinking style, with a well-balanced refreshing finish.

The bottom of their Hautes Côtes plot in Arcenant was replanted in white in 2017, giving its first vintage in 2020. Very pretty aromatics here, verbena and lime blossom, more citrus on the palate, very nice indeed with the right acidity. Slight youthful bitterness.

Les Boucherottes is on the southern boundary of Beaune just above Pommard’s Epenots vineyards. This side of the appellation tends to produce poised, elegant wines rather than the firmer more muscular style of the northern side of the commune. Deep black cherry colour, with sweet Victoria plum and cherry flavours. A broader shouldered style this year, but with the tell-tale supple silky tannins and finesse at the end.

The second vineyard to be picked, but had already hit 15%. 75 year old vines. Incredible dense purple colour. Superplump up front, an immediate attack of ripe fruit, then something of a hole, followed by the dry tannins. Not hot but not balanced either.

The domaine has five parcels across the village and blends them to make a beautiful Chambolle Musigny. Very pleasing ripe fruit, with flavours of loganberry and tayberry. The tannins are finely poised, and the finish is harmoniously soft and fresh.

The team had to do lots of sorting of wrinkled grapes. Strong deep purple, this is very rich on the palate, especially at the front, sun dried cherries, a drier finish. Certainly not spoiled by the heat but it has become a different style, not easily recognisable as Chambolle.

This is an excellent parcel in Vosne Romanée situated in the vineyards that flow into Nuits St Georges at the southern end of the village. Mathias describes this as the most serious of all the domaine’s Vosne village cuvées, justifying his decision to use 35% whole bunches in the vinification process this year. Sweet alpine and fruits of the forest flavours. This is a deliciously full and generous style, silky in nature, but with noticeable intensity. Very long and very classy.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 88-90

The vines are suffering here from the 161/49 rootstock problem. 40% whole bunch and 40% new wood have been used here. Darker in colour, a more structured wine, hence can take the stems. Shows the oak a touch more, with some coconut, the stems add a little tingle. A little disjointed at the moment but this should pull through.

Clos de la Fontaine often makes the lightest, prettiest, silkiest Vosne in the AF Gros portfolio, and is their first Vosne to enter its drinking window. This is the last year that the domaine will make this cuvée due to a vineyard reorganisation amongst the cousins within Vosne Romanée. A lovely final year! Poised, fresh and pure, this has characteristic elegance, with beautiful tayberry flavours and a fine long finish.

The Gros parcel of Echezeaux is one of the finest in the appellation, planted with 100-year-old vines. Packed with flavours of wild strawberry, mocha, and spice. This has broad shoulders and layered depth, showing a little more muscle than some years. An exceptionally powerful wine, very clearly a Grand Cru with a very long life ahead of it.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022`,

50% whole bunch which they have been doing here for a while, and two-thirds new wood. Glowing mid purple. The sample is taken from new wood, which one can see on the nose but not to excess. Bouncy raspberries, something a little smoky behind, showing a bit awkwardly at this early stage, though not without promise.
