En Primeur | Ch Le Pape Pessac Leognan 2019

"The 2019 Le Pape is exquisite. Floral, savory and blood orange top notes give the 2019 striking freshness to play off the natural radiance of red cherry and raspberry fruit. The balance of richness and vibrancy is compelling. Le Pape has seldom been this seductive. The 2019 is all class." Antonio Galloni
Ch Le Pape was bought in late 2011 by Véronique and her team at Ch Haut Bailly. Nestled between the vineyards of Haut Bailly and Smith Haut Lafitte, this charming estate has proved an incredibly astute purchase. Eight years on, their 2019 vintage confirms that this really is a Pessac Léognan to look out for.
The size and make-up of this vineyard are more reminiscent of Pomerol than Pessac: at only 9 hectares, it is one of the smallest properties in the appellation and is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The late-released 2019 is an absolute beauty and a testament to the tireless work and remarkable skill of the team at Ch Haut Bailly. They practice sustainable vineyard management and their attention to detail in the winery is second to none. This wine reflects not only the best of Pessac Léognan and the château's special location, but it also resonates with the most appealing characteristics of the outstanding 2019 vintage.
Refined, elegant, and yet subtly powerful, at this price it is most definitely not to be overlooked. At less than £27/bottle IB, it is one of the best value wines of the vintage.
