Overlooked communes, village wines and lesser-known names can offer incredible value, presenting a great way for those new to Burgundy to start their collection, or for the savvy expert to land a bargain for their cellar.

An unoaked cuvée which, following fermentation, ages on lees in tank for 6 months prior to bottling. Clean and pure, with a touch of rose petal and peach. This has a graceful volume and such charm, with delicate freshness on the finish. Good balance, inviting and easy on the finish.

The dominant force in this exceptional Bourgogne Blanc comes from the Les Palland vineyard close to Puligny planted between 1945 and 1950. A beautiful expression of Côte de Beaune fruit, attractively scented with warm fresh croissant aromas. This is a very layered wine, with characters of vanilla and cream, and an energetic finish of fresh lemon sherbet.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2020,
    Score: 17

This is a pretty little wine with loads of energy and flair, and it looks every inch a mini-Meursault given its fruit integrity and balance. Just about drinking and rather juicy and clean, this is a perfect white for drinking from 2023 – 2025.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 89-91

From Pellands and Millerands, excellent sites which in another village would doubtless be classified at village level. Fine classy bouquet after a pale colour. This has a really impressive mineral thread running through the substantial weight of fruit, juicy and fresh at the same time. Fichet followers will love his 2020 BBVV! 5 star wine

The Aligoté grape variety is going through something of a resurgence. Gone are the days of a variety that struggled to achieve optimal ripeness. This grape is maximising its potential thanks to the current weather conditions and gaining newfound recognition. The Comte Armand wine is a fine example; full of walnuts and hazelnuts, with a bright lime fruit character, this has both intensity and length.

The 2020 Bourgogne Aligoté comes from three parcels had been racked the previous week, aged 50% in tank and 50% in 500-litre barrels. It has a perfumed, lavender-tinged bouquet. The palate is fresh and lemony on the entry, touches of pear and lime, simple but fresh and with a dab of ginger on the finish. Fine. Drink 2022 - 2026

  • JAM

Big crop picked 16th September, below Pommard and Volnay and Meursault. Made half and half in 600 litre barrels and stainless steel. A little deeper in colour and indeed in bouquet than the Chardonnay. Apple and fresh quince, mostly young vine produce, but this is absolutely delicious, and sweeps through to a long finish.

The 2020 vintage really enhances the Meursault like characteristics of this vineyard’s wine coming from the Volnay side of the appellation and enjoying a rich base of clay in the soil. Striking yellow fruit characters with hints of quince and medlar jam. The excellent creamy volume is held together perfectly by a gentle touch of youthful acidity. Approachable and instantly pleasurable.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Currently in tank, on its finings. Pale colour. A light fresh bouquet with attractive fruit. Some plums, some fresh apple, a steady build up in flesh towards the back of the palate, a good balancing acidity, and fine persistence. Really very good indeed.

The 64-year-old vines on the Pinson plot, which sits next door to their parcel of Forêts, flourish on this vineyard’s clay and chalk-based soils and produce a weightier 1er Cru than its neighbour. Initially the citrus fruits are a little reserved on the nose, but on the palate the wine has a bold structure. It has both weight and volume whilst always remaining alive and fresh. A hint of the seashore air about it, this is a classic Chablis, which would be ideal with shellfish.

  • BURG

    Burghound, October 2021,
    Score: 90 - 93

The more floral-suffused nose of both white and yellow orchard fruit reflects notes of spice, quinine, tidal pool and a more subtle hint of citrus influence. There is good refinement to the vibrant and rich but appealingly delineated flavors that dans across the palate on the lingering and saline-inflected finale. This is really quite fine and should age accordingly. Outstanding. Drink 2025+

A delicious example of Pinot Noir coming from 4 different parcels based on the borders of Vougeot, Chambolle Musigny and Morey St Denis. Charming red fruit purity, this is lively and fresh, with hints of cranberry and pomegranate crunchiness. Great clarity, medium bodied with a light red berry finish.

The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge comes from three different appellations in the Côte de Nuits. Quite a rich nose for a Bourgogne Rouge with blackcurrant and cassis fruit, the palate is sweet and candied with a cherry cola tinged finish. Drink 2022 - 2025

This is a lower-lying village cuvée with vineyards bordering the commune of Santenay. The fruit is 100% destalked, allowing its true Pinot characteristics to shine. Bright crimson colour, this is a very charming style with just 30% new oak. There is a tinge of Moroccan spice and nutmeg, with an attractive tightness on the finish.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 88

The 2020 Maranges La Rue de Pierres comes from vines planted in 1987/88 in a steeper vineyard than La Goty. This is 100% de-stemmed, with maceration over 20 days in concrete vats. It has a light, quite floral bouquet, though I suspect that the recent bottling denuded it of the fruité that will emerge with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, fleshy red cherry and strawberry fruit, fine acidity and attractive transparency toward the finish. Just give this 12 months to settle. Sitting on the southern boundary of the appellation, Justin commented that Clos Rousseau’s naturally cooler location certainly aided the Pinot Noir this year. A very deep dark colour, with a melody of rich wild summer fruits. A more intense and dense style than some years, but deliciously rich, very full, long and sweet on the finish.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 89-91

From four plots, Fourneaux, Petit Clos Rousseau and two in Grand Clos Rousseau. Medium to full purple. The bouquet is a little more accessible than Maladière, but growing in density. The ripeness is more evident, this is quite similar to Beauregard in that regard, with some cherry and ripe raspberry. Medium plus length and a little fresher to the finish.

A family monopole on the northern boundary of Chorey, known for its generosity and fruit appeal. Dark olive in colour, with abundant sweet blackberries. This is lush and full, with rounded tannins and a layer of smoke and spice. Lovely and very giving.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 91-93

The 2020 Chorey-lès-Beaune Pièce du Chapitre comes from just under a hectare and a half of 70-year old vine that has been produced since 2001. It has a bright black cherry, plummy, peony-tinged bouquet that leaps from the glass. The new oak, 25%, is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. There is a fine bead of acidity here, superb tension with a harmonious, caressing finish with just the right amount of sapidiy. Excellent and doubtless great value. Drink 2024 - 2040

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17.5

This is a sensational wine, and it is surely one of the finest Chorey vintages I can remember, and I have been following these guys for 30 years. The fruit texture, purity, succulence, and length are magnificent, and the value is incredible. For a truly regal Chorey, nothing comes close to this Tollot creation.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 84-87

Inky black with a purple rim. The nose is very backward. Like the regular Chorey, there is a huge intensity of black fruit, again with considerable grip behind, a little appley and still smells of the fermentation marc.

From vines averaging 60 years in age, Nicolas says this wine shows the charms of a “solar year”. Plum and morello cherry on the nose. With a rewarding intensity and sweetness, this has an easy mid-palate richness. The tannins are rounded with a pleasing subtlety and easy finish.
