En Primeur | Benjamin Leroux

Ben Leroux created his own label in 2013, comprising an 8 hectare domaine and around 20 hectares of purchased grapes from some of the most exciting appellations in the Cote d’Or. His pedigree is of the highest order; following internships at some of the greatest estates around the world, he was responsible for the famous Pommard estate, Comte Armand, for 15 years, overseeing a roll call of exceptional vintages. For the negoce wines his policy is to buy grapes rather than juice or wine and insists on having a hand in the vineyards he buys from, so that the fruit meets his exacting standards. He sits at the very top of the group of young stellar winemakers changing the face of négociant wines in Burgundy.

Ben cites two challenges in the 2020 vintage. Most important were the dry conditions: he says vineyard management and techniques respectful of the soil and vine were vital to maintain healthy and productive fruit during this time, especially for the Pinot Noir. The second was complacency! He says that in easy years such as the spring and summer of 2020, there is a danger you could be caught napping. You can never afford to do that when growing grapes and making wine! One thing is for sure, in 2020 he most definitely was not complacent, and this is a standout cellar for the vintage.

This is such a lovely lieu-dit on the border of Chambolle Musigny. There are just 3 hectares of village wine in Vougeot, of which Clos du Village is one, making this wine even more special. Brilliant purple colour, it has a sweetness of raspberries. This is a tender, gentle style, with graceful juicy fruit and a touch of dark chocolate on the finish. Succulent and exciting.

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 89-91

The 2020 Vougeot Clos de Village has a pretty, tertiary nose that unfolds nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, brown spices infusing the red berry fruit, though it needs a little more tension on the finish.

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17.5

Pure, bright and easy to both understand and enjoy, this is a classic Leroux style, and it is harmonious, soothing and delicately juicy. Great value and forward, too, this is a cunning buy and one which will bring melodic flavours and engaging drinking early in its life.

    Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022,
    Score: 89-92

Bright but not exceptionally intense purple colour. This is discreet on the nose, takes its time to come out, but it builds very well at the back, softer than sometimes, well balanced tannins, not too much acidity.

The selection of very old vines for this cuvée made it perfect to use a large proportion of whole clusters during the vinification. At 70% this wine has all the “matière” to support the stalks. Firm dark fruit flavours, a touch of graphite and spice, this is quite a serious styled Chambolle focusing a little more on muscle and power than in some years. A wine to age.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 85-87

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several parcels. It has a light and slightly tertiary nose that needs a little more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like opening, red cherries and strawberry, with touches of orange pith on the finish.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17.5

This is a lovely wine and there is a lovely floral nose, fine mid-palate and also some surprisingly grainy tannins on the finish, too. This will guard the wine well for a good four or five years, and by then, it will look nice and controlled.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 90-93

Sourced from Les Athets, Véroilles and young vine 1er cru Chatelots, one third whole bunch. Very pretty unexaggerated purple. This has not yet been racked so the bouquet is less prominent. Rose buds and violets, then a pretty and suave red fruit, still with the roses, a very stylish Chambolle not showing any drought at all. Remarkably long finish. A strong four stars.

Sourced from 5 different locations in the village. A lovely selection of mulberry, morello cherry and blackberry. Poised between sweet dark fruits and intensity and structure. Focused, with a mass of firm, strong spiced flavours and granular tannins kept perfectly in check by a lively freshness on the finish.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 87-89

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has a slight smudged bouquet, red plum and cassis fruit. The palate is well balanced, the one-third whole bunch lending freshness, though I find its Nuits Saint-Georges counterpart has a touch more precision and charm.

Mitans derives from the old French word for middle or centre, aptly for this cru which lies at the foot of the slope just beneath the village, directly in the heart of the appellation. The soil here is fine clay creating a very composed wine. Plenty of earthy, wild bramble fruits. It is deeply structured, with a chewy mouthfeel and will age extremely well.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 90-92

The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17.5

I like this, and it seems that Ben’s affinity with Volnay continues with this lovely vintage. Floral, layered and classy, this is a more expensive wine, but it is justified with a millefeuille of red and black fruit and a tender texture.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 88-91

From the Ormeau part of Mitans. Very dark colour. Ripe fruit with a sundried element, quite dark fruit for Volnay, but the tannins are ripe and the acidity is lower. Medium density and persistence

Aux Boudots is the most northerly 1er Cru in Nuits St Georges, neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Aux Malconsorts. Another of Benjamin’s cuvées with a high proportion of whole bunches (70%) in 2020. Full of wild alpine fruits and hedgerow scent, this is joyous, giving and succulent, with a Vosne Romanée charm to it. Great breadth and a lovely touch of sweetness on the finish. Delicious in every way.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: NR

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges les Boudots 1er Cru was one of the few reds that had not been racked. Including two-thirds whole bunch, it has a stemmy, Dujac-like bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of steaminess here and it just obscures the terroir on the finish. Racking will help this, so I will not score this for now.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022,
    Score: 91-93

One third whole bunch vinification to keep it lively. Perfumed notes on a very pretty clear purple colour. This starts discreetly but builds very well, with quite a savoury touch at the finish and plenty of tannins but they are properly ripe. Good length.
