    This Cru Bourgeois Château benefits from its proximity to St Julien and their 2014 has a true Médoc character. It has appealing red fruit and herbal aromas, followed by a drive of fresh Cabernet energy. The tannins provide substance and length, aided by a gentle sweetness of fruit on the finish.

    A wine with charm and intensity highlighting its excellent position sitting on the borders of St Julien. Plump juicy damson fruits, with hints of freshly cut vanilla pod. This balances a breadth of fruit with a hint of rusticity on the back palate which provides personality and character. Very good depth and length.

    The Château Lanessan 2014 has an unusually high-toned bouquet with blackberry and iodine aromas, Margaux-like in style, with a pinch of cedar and black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little pinched at the moment but this Lanessan should mellow and gain weight by the time bottling. Classic, reserved with a graphite aftertaste - those that appreciate the style of Lanessan will appreciate their 2014.

    The 2014 Lanessan is wonderfully silky and nuanced in the glass. Bright red stone fruits, cranberry, blood orange, mint, spices and crushed flowers add nuance in a mid-weight, polished wine that should drink beautifully over the near and medium term.

    There is a whoosh of red fruit here on the palate which takes one by surprise and, coupled with some strident, characterful oak, it means that this is a very successful Lanessan. The stylish texture and length only add to its allure. This is a dark horse and a wine which you should look out for.

One of the oldest estates in the Médoc dating from the 14th century, Lanessan was not classified in 1855 as they failed to submit a sample. Had they done so, some specialists believe that it would have been listed as a Fifth Growth. Not particularly great news for the château owners, but for its consumers on the other hand...

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
