Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, January 2019,
Score: 90-92The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Cuvée des Merles Grand Cru offers ripe black cherries mixed with crème de cassis and violet on the nose, becoming more floral as it opens in the glass. The weighty palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin and quite voluminous for a Charmes-Chambertin. The finish features slightly tarry red fruit laced with black pepper. I would just like more red fruit to balance the black here. 2022 - 2036

Burghound, January 2019,
Score: 91-94A wafting and airy nose is both elegant and entrancing with its cool essence of softly spiced red pinot fruit that offers excellent complexity. The succulent, rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract while delivering better length on the balanced and harmonious finish. This is lovely and very Charmes in character. Drink 2032+

Wine Advocate, January 2019,
Score: 92-94Lavish and expressive, the 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée des Merles bursts from the glass with a fruit-driven bouquet of ripe cherries, licorice, spices and sweet soil that is typical of this vineyard. Full-bodied, satiny and expansive, the wine's fine structuring tannins are entirely cloaked in succulent fruit. The finish displays good length and delineation. Of all Ponsot's grands crus, this will be the best bet for near-term consumption.

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.
Region
Charmes-Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
