Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, January 2014
Lively, currant fruit aromas, with hints of dark spices. This is a well-structured Chambolle, with a strong meaty midpalate and excellent weight on the finish.
-
Neal Martin, December 2013,
Score: 90-92The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes comes from a single 0.31-hectare parcel that was planted in 1980. It has a deep purple color. The nose is very intense with blackberry, cassis and spice aromas - quite a feisty, precocious bouquet here. Conversely, the palate is firm, masculine and structured. It is quite introspective at the moment with an austere finish: a Chambolle worth tucking away for 5-6 years.
-
Jancis Robinson, January 2014,
Score: 17+Bacon fat and sausage on the nose, plus really pure black fruit. Chambolle disguised as Hermitage. Fine, chalky tannins. Delicious, if perhaps not immediately identifiable as burgundy. Drink 2015-2024

Domaine Sérafin Père et Fils

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.
Region
Chambolle-Musigny
The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
