Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, January 2014
A very exotic and flamboyant style in 2012, with lots of dense bramble fruits. This is mouth-coatingly rich and full with a long moreish finish. A lovely style.

Neal Martin, December 2013,
Score: 91-93The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux-Bruns, obviously from the premier cru side, has a more voluminous bouquet with fleshy and forward crushed strawberry and red cherry scents that is already very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied but full in the mouth, adorned with soft and corpulent red berry fruit and a lovely, caressing finish that glides to its conclusion. This is superb.

Burghound, January 2014,
Score: 90-92As it usually is this is both slightly riper and a bit more deeply pitched with its notes of plum, black cherry and dark currants, all of which is trimmed in soft spice notes. There is good volume, concentration and phenolic maturity to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that possess an appealing combination of concentration, power and drive on the balanced and lingering finish. This is almost never as elegant as the Chatelots but it offers a more robust interpretation of Chambolle in the same fashion as the Les Baudes. Drink 2020+

Jancis Robinson, January 2014,
Score: 16.5+Sweet oak and savoury fruit – always a welcome combination – and a whole bunch stemminess too. Dry, grainy tannin. Light body. Lovely flavours, but a little insubstantial on the palate. Drink 2015-2025

Producer
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod

Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.
Region
Chambolle-Musigny
The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
