  Vaudésir’s position, just behind the other grand cru vineyards, means it is a relatively protected and warm site; surprisingly, it always produces wines of great finesse. The initial aromas of lime and camomile on the palate give drive and energy from the offset. The finish is wonderfully seductive, with elegance and grace aplenty.

  The 2018 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru is a blend of three parcels that add up to about a half hectare. Ample, powerful and creamy in the glass, the 2018 possesses terrific richness in all of its dimensions. Dried pear, almond, crushed flowers and herbs give the Vaudésir a distinctly savory profile that is quite attractive, while the fruit is more pushed into the background. Even with all of its natural breadth, the 2018 retains a good bit of mineral underpinning.

  A cool, pure and retained nose is wonderfully elegant with its aromas of white fruit compote, lemon zest, spice and a whiff of sea breeze. The supple and refined flavors are on the lighter side though this is not to say dilute while delivering fine length on the racy and attractively dry finale. This may well put on weight as it ages but it would be fair to say that it doesn't have the mid-palate density of the best in the range. Drink: 2027+

  From 3 plots, 2 north facing and one south. The difference is enough for them to be picked a week apart. Around 10% is in wood. Clear pale colour with a light lemon tint. Recently sulphured. Not much nose therefore but an excellent concentration of ripe fruit sitting on its bed of limestone. A firm long finish. Very promising.

Bernard Billaud sold his estate to the Cote d’Or’s largest landowner, Maison Faiveley, in 2014 and it is heartening to see this famous Nuits St Georges house both maintaining and driving the quality ideals of this great Chablis estate ever further forward. This substantial domaine of 17 hectares comprises exceptional vineyard sites including four premiers crus and four grands crus. Mature vineyards and minimal use of oak produce crisp and driven wines which are delicious in youth and fabulous with some age. The individual terroirs always shine through.
