Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, December 2019
The south easterly facing slopes of this fine premier cru produce a very aromatic wine with hints of jasmine and fresh orange peel. Balancing gentle volume with a subtle creamy texture, this is a slightly more substantial style than Benoît’s Vaillons and has a lovely zing of freshness at the end. Exemplary.

Antonio Galloni, January 2020,
Score: 92-94The 2018 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is an ample, creamy and super-expressive wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and minty notes all flesh out in a Chablis endowed with striking depth and resonance - all qualities that build into the long, beautifully persistent finish. This is one of the bigger premiers crus in the range, but it also retains terrific freshness and vibrancy.
-
Burghound, October 2019,
Score: 90-92This is also quite cool with its restrained, airy and more elegant nose that features notes of mineral reduction, oyster shell and white flowers. The racy and beautifully well-delineated middle weight flavors deliver excellent persistence on the clean, notably dry and bracing finale where a hint of bitter lemon appears. Drink: 2023+
-
James Suckling, August 2019,
Score: 91-92This has attractive peach and peach-kernel aromas with hints of flint and almond pastry. The palate has a very fleshy and succulent feel with apricot, mango and yellow-peach flavors. A steely-mineral spark below. Drink on release.
-
Jasper Morris MW, December 2019,
Score: 90-92Clear brisk fresh colour, the nose hidden at first but then some ripe yellow fruit emerges before returning to its marine mineral base with the lightest of reductive notes at the finish, which is typical of Montmains.

Producer
Domaine Jean-Paul Droin

Benoît Droin is the 14th generation of his family to manage this domaine, whose history stretched back a staggering 400 years. He is a fanatical viticulturalist with an unparalleled understanding of the impressive array of the region and its vines. Widely respected as one of the most dynamic winemakers in the region, he has build on the success of his father, Jean-Paul, in his own distinctive style. He has taken the domaine away from the pronounced use of new oak for which it was once known, and reduced yields through a revised pruning system. The concentration and purity of the fruit he produces makes exemplary Chablis. Unmistakable as well as captivating; Chablis at its best.
Region
Chablis
Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
