Bordeaux 2020 | The Value Collection

We know how intimidating Bordeaux can be, with so many wines, producers and nuances it can be hard to know where to start -- not to mention the often eye-watering prices. But here at Goedhuis we want to change all that. That’s why we have put together a list of some of the best value buys of the vintage which exemplify their appellation and style of the vintage. We have also created an accompanying video with experts from our team to talk you through what to look for when first getting into Bordeaux, which you can watch here.

Whether you’re new to Bordeaux or just looking to find some of the best value around, the wines below represent excellent quality for their price and can sit comfortably alongside more esteemed chateaux in your cellar without breaking the bank.

Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, April 2021,
    Score: 88-90

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Situated at the northerly tip of the Médoc close to the Gironde estuary this is a wine which accentuates the quality of the small Cabernet Sauvignon berries in this vintage. This is full of deep dark currant flavours with added notes of graphite and eucalyptus. It is tensile and alive, the tannins provide a firm core and the nervous freshness at the end lifts the flavours. Superb in its price quality category

  • JS

    James Suckling, April 2021,

La Tour de By is on a roll right now and this is another wine with superb fruit density coupled with admirable freshness and crunch on the finish. Blackberry and spice on the front palate segues into powdery tannins and perfectly balanced oak and acidity.

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, April 2021,
    Score: 16

Purple colour so dark, it's black at the core. Intense aroma of cassis and cedar, seems so savoury and non-sweet after tasting a line-up of Austrian Blaufränkisch. Dark and a little smoky/charry – the savoury rather than the sweet side of oak spice – then a hint of something floral as it opens. Ripe and dark-fruited on the palate. Compact but surprisingly smooth tannins. Fresh and nicely dry on the finish. (JH) 13.5%. Drink 2025 – 2030

  • WCI

    Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021,

Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts with impactful notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote and kirsch, plus suggestions of violets, mocha and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with vibrant black fruits and fantastic freshness, framed by ripe, velvety tannins, finishing long and fragrant. 18,000 bottles are expected to be made. What I like about Angludet in 2020 is that the front half of the experience is lush and expansive, with tender moments as well as more commanding flavours and then, at the back of the palate, the tannins and acidity both wait patiently for the fruit to do its dance before coming in and closing the door quietly. Perfectly judged, nicely balanced, reassuringly accurate and also downright tasty, this is a lovely wine and it is one of the most delightful forward-drinking, but complete, wines of the year. Winemaker Ben Sichel explained that his Merlot was high in sugar and blessed with balancing acidity. He knew it was critical to preserve freshness in the Merlot and he started picking relatively early on 9th September, waiting patiently before starting on the Cabernet. He started picking Cabernet on 21st September and he finished on the 1st October. This period included some rainy patches which diluted the fruit slightly and also helped it to complete its ripeness. Petit Verdot came in on the 1st October. This measured approach to harvesting guaranteed both the ripeness of the fruit and also the smoothness of the tannins and then Ben vinified his crop softly to achieve depth of flavour without astringency. It is clear that he consummately achieved his aims, underlining just how important it is to have a skillful winemaker with profound viticultural skills in a challenging vintage like this one.
