Barbaresco Produttori del Barbaresco 2018

Always one of the buys of the year, we are delighted to release: Produttori del Barbaresco's 2018 Barbaresco at £138/6 IB. The price is one of the most compelling from this region for the quality this illustrious estate consistently delivers.

The 2018 Barbaresco is no ordinary wine, it packs a huge amount in for its £30.27 per bottle price tag on the table. Wine maker Aldo Vacca explained he made no single vineyard Crus in 2018. A hailstorm hit a key part of the Barbaresco appellation in July, so this village Barbaresco contains fruit from all the top single vineyard locations. Aldo said, “We decided to just release one Barbaresco in 2018 to give the desired complexity to our flagship wine”.

We tasted the 2018 yesterday. It’s more concentrated, broader and more powerful than normal, smouldering under the surface. Peonies, rose, wild strawberry and dark red cherry are wound into a fine structure, everything is perfectly balanced and in harmony. This can be drunk now, but if you did want to put a few cases aside for drinking later we certainly wouldn’t advise against it. In fact, we would recommend a bit of both!

For anyone looking for an affordable new area which offers the beauty and complexity of Burgundy, Piedmont is it. Goedhuis has followed this excellent estate for the last five years. It is abundantly clear that Produttori is absolutely unbeatable at crafting the highest quality wines which remain astoundingly good value.

    Goedhuis, November 2021

No single vineyards Crus made this year due to a bad hailstorm on the 15th July, in particular in the Ovello, Montestefano, Montefico vineyard sites. Putting your nose to the glass it’s shy at first, then slowly unfurls with seductive flavours and alluring aromatics. Smouldering darker fruits, plum, dark Griotte cherry, but with time in the glass hints of pretty red fruits and floral notes appear. Peonies, rose, wild strawberry and dark red cherry are wound into a fine structure atop the dark plum and savoury notes of forest floor and subtle warm spices. This certainly has concentration and power in the glass. Lots of complexity and broader shoulders than normal coming from the additional single Crus that have gone into this blend, but still everything is perfectly balanced and in harmony. Lovely freshness on the palate and a really wonderful body and texture with lots of fine tannins which are ripe and juicy. It’s as seductive as ever and utterly delicious. Highly recommended.

The 2018 Barbaresco is an attractive, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next 10-15 years, maybe more. In 2018 the Produttori did not bottle their Riservas. Instead, all of the best lots of those grapes went into the straight Barbaresco bottling, another in a long string of successes from this historic house. Dark cherry, cedar, tobacco and spice fill out the layers. There is good depth and a good deal of tannin too, just not the complexity or nuance of the very best years. Drink 2023 - 2033
