A Summer Hat Trick | Crisp unoaked Chardonnay, Provencal Rose & Kiwi Pinot Noir

We wanted to highlight this absolutely electric newly landed Chardonnay, and an epic rose and red to make a perfect summer hat trick. Matthew Jukes has just given the Begude a rave review: calling it "one of the finest value chardonnays in the UK today", and awarding a stonking 17.5 points.

Light lemon colour. Striking and floral, hints of jasmin, peoney and kumquat. A gracious style balancing richness of fruit, with a good citrus vibrance. Beautifully clean and very refreshing on the finish.

One would ordinarily pair a sweet pie with sweet wine, but none have sufficiently dominant lime flavours, so I have found a bone dry white with a piercingly fresh lime theme. Silky on the palate and invigoratingly citrusy on the finish, this is one of the finest value chardonnays in the UK today.

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2022, Score: 17.5

As sure as night follows day, the new vintage of Begude’s inexpensive Chardonnay arrives in the UK, I am fortunate to see a preview sample, and it is an inevitable beauty. I have followed Begude since the very first moment that James and Catherine Kinglake bought the property, and they have never put a foot wrong. 2021 Le Haut du Puits shows uncommon sophistication with its aromatherapeutic nose, silky-smooth texture, relaxing aura and pin-sharp finish. It is the vinous equivalent of a cleansing sauna followed by indulgent massage and an electrifying leap into an ice-cold plunge pool. You cannot fail to feel like you have given your palate a stunning sensory makeover after just one glass. Drink now - 2023

Light rose petal pink colour. Lovely aromatics of fresh cherry, jasmine and honeysuckle. Delicious clarity of fruit, bright and vibrant, with an appealing sense of structure on the finish. Fresh and graceful.

  • Matthew Jukes, August 2022

The 2021s are a little more edgy and angular than the slightly richer 2020s, and I like this stance on the palate. Saint Baillon’s ’21 is a touch greener and livelier than usual, and while the trademark melon and pomegranate juice hints are present, there are some invigorating, tangy, citrus moments, too. This is an immensely classy wine, and the value is sensational. Served blind, this could be twice the price given its grace and balance!
