The red ferrous soil of this vineyard gives a deeply flavoured, intense style of wine. It is always a stand-out wine in the cellar and one of Thomas’s favourites. The palate bursts with fruit coulis flavorus. The attack is generous, evolving with mineral precision. Complex and fine.
Today there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Caillerets with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that is sneaky long. This is a classic Carelles of lace and grace. Drink 2025+
The 2017 Volnay Les Carelles 1er Cru includes 10-15% whole bunches. The nose is missing the same drive and fruit concentration as the Les Caillerets. The palate is better with tart red cherry fruit mixed with crushed stone and a touch of balsamic, although I find that the Les Caillerets has more panache and density on the finish. I will be cautious with my score for now. 2021 - 2036
The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Carelles is a beauty, bursting with notes of rose petal, violet, dark chocolate, wild berries and ripe cherries. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and concentrated, its ripe core of fruit displaying lovely energy and succulence, framed by fine-grained, elegantly chalky tannins and concluding with a long finish. This will be a cuvée to seek out in bottle.
Intense, almost essence of Pinot Noir! Very juicy start. Then finely judged intense fruit within a corset of fine tannins, there in abundance. GV. Drink 2024-2036
We are delighted to introduce the wines of Thomas Bouley in 2015, joining our selection of great Volnay domaines. Those customers who bought Burgundy en primeur in the early days of Goedhuis Co may have a sense of déjà vu! Johnny first bought from Thomas’s father Jean-Marc in the 1980s. After a few years’ sabbatical it is wonderful to be reacquainted with this prestigious domaine whose wines we consider very special indeed. Much has happened in the intervening years. Son Thomas now makes the wines and is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most dedicated growers, with an unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. They have also just completed one of the area’s most sophisticated new wineries right in the heart of Volnay. This investment will ensure that the already high quality of the domaine will only ascend. This is a great estate making wines which truly reflect Volnay and Pommard.
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
