This cuvée replaces our allocation of Sentier du Clou, since that vineyard has stayed with Joseph. It is a brilliant alternative. The southeast facing mid-slope premier cru has produced a plump, satisfying, and fleshy 2017. It blends its juicy stone fruit texture with a chalky persistence on the finish. It will drink well from early on.
Here the nose plays right on the edge of reduction due to some unabsorbed post-bottling sulfur though it's not so much as to mask the pear, floral and apple-scented nose. The delicious middle weight flavors possess solid volume as well as a lush mouth feel, all wrapped in a nicely persistent finish. This needs to develop better overall depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. Drink 2023+
The 2017 Saint-Aubin les Castet 1er Cru has a delightful, quite engaging bouquet with hints of yellow flower and cockle shells, a light estuarine scent gradually unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh crisp citrus fruit on the entry, quite Puligny-like in style with a tang of quince and marmalade perking up the poised finish. I like the energy and tension here - good potential. (DIAM closure) 2021 - 2033
One of our favourite Burgundy estates, Domaine Marc Colin produces year-in and year-out, some of the most balanced, expressive wines in the Côte de Beaune. Their strict principles of using only natural yeast, having a slow, cool fermentation and little ‘débourbage' (draining the juice fromits sediment) contributes to their pure, fresh flavours and impeccable balance. The domaine is now run by brothers Pierre-Yves, Damien and Joseph who took over from their semi-retired father several years back. The "changing of the guard" has had little effect on the wines. The only notable difference is less stirring of the lees in order to retain the wines' mineral undertones. And as aresult, they are as delicious and sincere as ever.
Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
