Pommard Les Fremiers lies on the Meursault/Volnay border. A very fine cuvée with sweet dark succulent fruit. It possesses a natural brightness, with a drive of freshness through the mid-palate. The robust tannins flow into a fine sweetly-fruited finish.
An attractively fresh and slightly more elegant nose is also quite ripe with its nose of liqueur-like dark berry fruit, spice, earth and soft game nuances. The exceptionally rich, intense and palate drenching flavors possess outstanding size and weight along with imposing power on the driving, rustic and muscular finish. This decidedly old school effort is clearly built for the long-term and I would advise allowing this bad boy at least a decade of aging first. Drink 2037+
Another de Courcel red that sits at the firmer and more structured end of the Pommard spectrum, this has ripe damson and black fig flavours, chewy, mouthcoating tannins, some wild herbs and a backbone of acidity that will help it to emerge from its shell with time. Drink 2024-2032
De Courcel is one of the Côte de Beaune’s grandest estates, having been in the ownership pf the de Courcel family since the late 17th century. The estate is skilfully managed by Yves Confuron from Vosne Romanée. He prefers to pick late, allowing him to vinify with whole bunches and age his wines a little longer in cask before bottling, which he feels provides an added layer of texture to the wines.
A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, Pommard's wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. Its vines cover 317 hectares of which over a third are premier cru vineyards. Several have pronounced following and even one, Les Rugiens, is being pushed to become a grand cru.
