This famous vineyard sitting on the higher slopes behind Le Montrachet in the commune of St Aubin has a reputation for making bright, energetic wines. A lovely zest of citrus lime freshness is balanced by textured weight with hints brioche. This long, full, rich white Burgundy is highly recommended.
Maison Roche de Bellene is Nicolas Potel's négociant company. Following huge changes with bigger and more interesting projects behind the scenes, Nicolas left his former business and took up permanent residence at his new Beaune chai. Here, he is focusing on his négociant wines that he is continuing from his previous portfolio as well as producing a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). We have never seen him happier. He chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune. To house his new spirit and wines, he is rebuilding a 14th century cellar with only natural, pure materials including organic chalk and hemp. Unique in the region, we have never seen anything like it.
Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
