Initially this is beautifully floral with hints of rose petals. Then the classic Bâtard boldness develops in the palate, with a lovely rich creamy texture, and hints of banana toffee. This is a high quality wine, very long and extremely intense.
A slight hint of reduction does not materially detract from the intensely floral-suffused nose that displays hints of acacia blossom and rose petal along with spice, citrus and pear aromas. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the mouth coating and borderline opulent big-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture on the strikingly persistent and overtly powerful finish. A definite 'wow' wine. Don't miss! Drink: 2028+
The 2016 Batard Montrachet Grand Cru was vinified together rather than in four different parcels due to the frost (in fact one plot was pulled out). It has a much more involving and expressive bouquet compared to the Bienvenues. The palate is slightly viscous on the entry countered by a keen thread of acidity, not as tensile as the Bienvenues but surprisingly richer than one would have expected, with traces of wild honey toward the caressing finish. This may well turn out to be the pick of Leflaive's 2016s. Drink 2020-2035
The Bâtard is more reserved than the Bienvenues, opening with aeration to reveal notes of preserved lemon, orange zest, yellow orchard fruit and crème pâtissière. The wine is full-bodied and glossy, weightier than the Bienvenues, with a muscular, soil-driven personality. This still feels quite primary and, like the Pucelles, it will need bottle age to reveal all its potential. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040
"One of the greatest white wine domaines in Burgundy" remarked Clive Coates. Doamine Leflaive's vineyards in Puligny Montrachet are steeped in history and the current generation can look back to 1717 for the first Leflaive family occupation of the farm buildings that they use today. The domaine was founded by Joseph Leflaive, who came to Burgundy in 1905. Anne-Claude Leflaive, the granddaughter of Joseph was appointed to run the domaine in 1990. A fervent proponent of biodynamic viticulture, Anne-Claude converted the domaine to biodynamics. After her untimely death in 2015, Brice de La Morandiere's, Anne-Claude's nephew and great grand son of Joseph Leflaive took on the mantle. He upholds the terroir-orientated, sustainable winemaking philosophy of the family.
Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
