Always a favourite of Etienne’s and what a beauty. Shining purple in colour, full of striking autumnal fruits. A very layered wine with a silky tannic harmony. This is high class and will stand alongside many grands crus this year.
A discreet application of wood frames the exuberantly spicy and notably ripe aromas of dark currant, violet and Asian-style tea. The rich, sleek and mineral-driven flavors display focused power on the saline, punchy and strikingly long finale. This beauty is more firmly structured and will need a few years first. Outstanding. The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a tightly-wound bouquet that needed some coaxing from the glass, eventually unfurling with enticing aromas of small red cherries, raspberry, crushed violets and a subtle slate-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful structure, an imperious Les Beaux Monts that stretches its wings towards the finish and delivers a quite compelling, vibrant, energetic finish with enormous depth. This is probably the best from this vineyard in 2015. Drink 2020 - 2050
One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
