Goedhuis, May 2018
Tasted blind, Burgfest May 2018: The was a fabulous opening to three flights of Cortons. It displayed vibrant pink grapefruit notes with a touch of smoky bacon fat. There was precision and persistence on the palate, and a good slug of power behind the fruit concentration, yet it remained a refined expression.

Goedhuis, November 2016
A lemon gold glows in the glass. The nose combines tangy lemon curd, smoke and tangerine pulp, all held in check by some distinctive minerality. Following on the palate is a firm acidity that carries the flow of ripe fruits along with it. It has that apparent ripeness of the 2015 vintage whilst remaining very composed, and shows the signature muscle of a classic Corton Charlemagne. Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière says it really has the ‘footprint’ of the Corton Charlemagne vineyard this year, which he explains has been growing ever louder since their conversion to biodynamics. This is a wine of great tension and drama.

Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 90-92
The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a very pretty, quite seductive bouquet with disarming scents of lemon curd, white peach and Mirabelle, well defined and the oak neatly integrated. The palate is very well balanced with very good weight in the mouth, a lightly brush of honey, praline, hints of almond and a touch of sea salt towards the finish. I appreciate the subtle mineralité here that flourishes as this Corton-Charlemagne opens with aeration. Drink Date 2019 - 2032

Burghound, June 2017, Score: 92-94
There is a discreet tropicality to the super-fresh nose of pear, apple, petrol and viognier-like aromas. The exceptionally rich, concentrated and intense medium weight plus flavors possess a lovely sense of vibrancy that continues onto the dry and even slightly austere finale. While not exactly classic in style, this beautifully textured effort is less 2015 in character than one might expect. 2025+

As legend goes, Charlemagne, king of the Franks, ordered Chardonnay planted in the vineyard of Corton during his reign in the 8th century so as he would not stain his light-coloured beard during moments of great thirst. Whether this is mere romantic fallacy, what cannot be denied is the exceptional quality of this appellation, particularly the wines from Bonneau du Martray. Domaine Bonneau du Martray planted its noble roots shortly after the French Revolution when vineyard land was swooped up from the church and resold to often wealthy bourgeoisies. Over the years, bits and pieces were chiselled off due to family divisions to what remains of the estate today - 11 hectares. Despite its losses, it remains the largest vineyard holder in Le Corton climat (9.5 ha) and is the only domaine besides Domaine de la Romanée Conti that produces exclusively grands crus. Since 1994, the domaine has been managed by Comte Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, the great nephew to René Bonneau du Martray. Though the family owns a small amount of Corton (which is treated as the spoiled baby of the family), their Corton Charlemagne is the wine for which they are celebrated. Regal and powerful, it is a wine which conquers the palate and is without a doubt, one of the finest white Burgundies produced in the Côte d'Or.Read less

This may be mere romantic fallacy, but what cannot be denied is the exceptional quality of this Grand Cru appellation in Aloxe Corton in the Cote de Beaune.
