Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, July 2017

The Pommiers like to pick late, producing Chablis that has ripeness and juiciness as well as the tingling mineral tension typical of this cool climate region. It is the domaine to go to for generous, forward, and early drinking Chablis. Brilliant citrus lemon in the glass, this has aromas of lemon sherbet and fresh melons. The palate has a smooth and easy style, with zippy Chardonnay fruit and a gently fresh finish.

Producer

Denis et Isabelle Pommier

Dénis and Isabelle Pommier created this charming estate in 1990 after inheriting several small parcels from Dénis’s grandfather, and adding further plots purchased from his aunt. They now have 18 hectares from which they produce various cuvées including two premiers crus: Côte de Lechet and Troésmes, which is sub-climat of the larger and more widely known cru, Beauroy. The Pommiers like to pick a little later than their neighbours, producing Chablis that has ripeness and juiciness as well as the tingling mineral tension typical of this cool climate. Hard work in the vineyards continually drives quality at this estate. This is place to go for forward, generous, and early drinking Chablis.

Region

Chablis, White Burgundy

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
