Tasting Notes

Burghound, June 2016, Score: 87-89

A pretty and ripe nose offers up notes of resin, petrol and white orchard fruit. There is fine richness to the relatively full-bodied flavors that possess solid mid-palate concentration before concluding in a saline-inflected, balanced and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This is very Chassagne in basic character. Drink 2018+

Producer

Domaine d'Eugénie

Domaine d'Eugénie was born following the acquisition of René Engel estate by François Pinault, alsoowner of Château Latour in Pauillac during the summer 2006. The estate is situated in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of La Côte de Nuits between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey Chambertin. This village is considered to be the treasure of big wines of Burgundy. The vineyard is about 6.5 hectares and extends onto the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot et Flagey-Echezeaux. The estate is managed by Frédéric Engerer who is the President at Château Latour in Pauillac.

Region

Chassagne-Montrachet, White Burgundy

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
