One of Vosne Romanée’s most prestigious 1er Crus, its style is famed for precision of red fruit flavours. This is a fine and beguiling wine, with almost crystalline red fruit flavours. It is fresh and lively with great drive and vitality on the finish. Very very good indeed.
A notably floral nose exhibits plenty of spice elements on the fresh and airy nose of pomegranate and red currant aromas. I like the detail, intense minerality and punch of the vibrant and beguilingly textured medium weight flavors that also possess a hint of blood orange on the persistent if slightly edgy and drying finish. As my predicted range would suggest I expect the finish to harmonize but it’s not a given and hence the addition of a question mark. I will revisit this from bottle next year so as to provide you with a more definitive review. Drink 2021+
The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaumonts has an extremely well-defined bouquet: vibrant on the nose and well defined with sous-bois scents infusing the blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the mineral notes becoming more obvious with time. The palate is full of energy: supple tannin, ebullient and vivacious red cherry and strawberry fruit segueing into a velvety finish. Seductive! Drink: 2017 - 2035
The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
