Reduction flattens the nose and renders a proper evaluation impossible. There is excellent phenolic maturity to the very round, even velvety big-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture before terminating in a powerful and mouth coating finish that is a bit less overtly austere than usual. In fact this is a relatively refined Corton though it is important to underscore that it does not come close to matching the refinement of the Combe d'Orveau. Drink 2023+
Blueberry and a hint of stewed raspberry on the nose. Fat, full, sweet and powerful but a bit warm, with its substantial baby fat currently blocking the wine's expression of terroir. The raspberry and underbrush flavors are a bit roasted and undifferentiated. Finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins. This is 13.5% alcohol with a reasonable pH of 3.35, according to Clavelier, but still strikes me as a bit extreme, with less tension than the other 2012s I tasted at this address. Drink 2020-2029
The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
