A ripe, complex and brooding nose features notes of cassis, red currant, earth and game along with plenty of spice nuances. There is good power to the concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that are underpinned by relatively fine tannins on the impressively long, dusty and moderately austere finish. This firmly structured and very serious effort is also quite good but as good as it is it can't quite match the Bonnes Mares in 2012. Drink 2023+
The 2012 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from a 0.32-hectare parcel planted in 1950 and 1951. It demonstrates more grandeur and authority on the nose compared to the unruly Bonnes-Mares, dealing up superior delineation and focus. The palate is rich and sensual on the entry: dark cherries, kirsch, marmalade and even a touch of peach. The acidity is well-judged and it finishes with a flourish of precocious candied fruit. This is just superb, a wine worthy of its status.
The 2012 Clos de La Roche is beautifully nuanced and layered from start to finish. Graphite, plum, blackberry jam, chalk and violets are some of the many notes that grace this utterly impeccable wine. Gorgeous, expressive aromatics are woven throughout, heightening the impression of total finesse. The 2012 is shaping up to be a beauty, but it naturally needs time. Drink 2024-2039
(Landanger's holding is in the middle of the cru): Medium-deep red. Ripe black raspberry, smoky minerality, mocha and animal fur on the inviting nose. Plush, sweet and horizontal; wonderfully rich, broad, palate-coating flavors of minerals, smoke, chocolate and savory brown spices. A voluptuous, varietally expressive Clos de la Roche with noble tannins, great sappy energy and outstanding echoing length. Drink 2026-2039
The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
