Noticeable but not aggressive oak does not dominate the perfumed and intensely floral nose of acacia blossom, lemon peel and yellow-fleshed fruit aromas. There is excellent power and drive to the intense and tension-filled flavors that are still on the linear side and this will need time to flesh out, particularly on the sneaky long finish that just seems to go on and on. This packed effort will need a lot of time to arrive at its peak.Drink: 2022+
Maison Roche de Bellene is Nicolas Potel's négociant company. Following huge changes with bigger and more interesting projects behind the scenes, Nicolas left his former business and took up permanent residence at his new Beaune chai. Here, he is focusing on his négociant wines that he is continuing from his previous portfolio as well as producing a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). We have never seen him happier. He chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune. To house his new spirit and wines, he is rebuilding a 14th century cellar with only natural, pure materials including organic chalk and hemp. Unique in the region, we have never seen anything like it.
Le Montrachet is the most famous white Burgundy Grand Cru coming from a single 8 hectare vineyard which overlaps into the communes of Puligny and Chassagne. Even as far back as the 18th century the wines of Le Montrachet had to be reserved a year in advance - a distant precursor to the en primeur system. The south east facing vineyards give the vines maximum exposure to the sun which combined with the limestone soil produces epic results.
