Tasting Notes

Burghound, April 2012, Score: 89-92

This is completely overwhelmed by its wood, from the nose to the finish and while there is good density, it's not at all clear that this will ever completely integrate the extremely generous oak. What concerns me even more than having residual wood on the nose even in full maturity is what the oak is likely to do to the texture of the wine, which in my experience is never a positive trait. We of course will see in time but I would advise caution.Drink: 2022+

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellène

Maison Roche de Bellene is Nicolas Potel's négociant company. Following huge changes with bigger and more interesting projects behind the scenes, Nicolas left his former business and took up permanent residence at his new Beaune chai. Here, he is focusing on his négociant wines that he is continuing from his previous portfolio as well as producing a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). We have never seen him happier. He chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune. To house his new spirit and wines, he is rebuilding a 14th century cellar with only natural, pure materials including organic chalk and hemp. Unique in the region, we have never seen anything like it.

Region

Côte de Nuits-Villages, Red Burgundy

This communal appellation covers the vineyards of Fixin, Brochon, Premeaux, Comblanchien, and Corgoloin. Spread along the length of the Cotes de Nuits the wines of the different communes are, unsurprisingly, varied, reflecting a range of different exposures and nuances of soild type. The vast majority of production is red, with just a smattering of Chardonnay grown. The reds can offer very good value from the better producers.
