A notably ripe nose also reflects pretty notes of red and blue pinot fruit but here the aromas are slightly cooler with a subtle minerality that can also be found on the finely detailed flavors that display fine verve on the impressively long though distinctly austere and very firm finish. In Burgundy, in each vintage and each vineyard there are usually both good and underwhelming wines, but if one had to name a grower whose every wine is consistently excellent, it would be Michel Lafarge, the former mayor of Volnay. This family domaine in the heart of the village of Volnay, was created at the beginning of the 19th century. Since then, the property has grown to 12 hectares. Along with Michel's son, Frederic, who, since 1997 has introduced some biodynamic methods, theytook the whole domaine biodynamic in 2000.
The viticultural capital of Burgundy, Beaune was the headquarters to the Duchy in the 13th century and is now home to many winemakers and négociants. The appellation of Beaune includes both reds and white wines, though the quantity of red is significantly greater. The soils are predominantly sandier than either those to the north in Aloxe Corton or those to the south in Volnay or Pommard, producing wines that are supple and early drinking in nature. Similar to other surrounding Côte de Beaune appellations, there are no grand crus, but it does offer 42 premier cru sites, some of which are exceptional. These include Les Grèves, Les Teurons and Les Vignes Franches.
