This is a really graceful, stylish wine with masses of polished dark fruit. A blend of roughly 50/50 cabernet sauvignon and merlot this has the class and sophistication of its sister.
The elegant second wine, 2001 Carruades de Lafite reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intertwined with cherry, currant, cranberry, and wet stone-like aromas. Drink this medium-bodied, up-front Pauillac over the next decade. Drink 2007-2014
Once again Lafite's second wine, the 2001 Carruades de Lafite, is an impeccably made effort. It is a blend of 50.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.2% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It represents 42.5% of Lafite's harvest. The wine reveals excellent red and black currant characteristics intermixed with hints of new saddle leather, wood, and spice box. It possesses a sweeter, more developed personality than its bigger sibling, and fine length. Drink 2004-2015
Fresh, but quite simple. Ripe nose. Good power and chunky tannins. Quite glamorous for the price. Very slightly green tannins and a slight hole in the middle. Initial attack is its strong suit. Dry, slightly dusty finish. Drink 2006-2015
One peek into Château Lafite's cellar is like entering into the 18th century. Its cobweb-coveredchandeliers subtly light shadowy corridors that play host to hundreds of ancient vintages. Nothing could be more representative of its wine making philosophy - classic, stylish and yet powerful - characteristics that have made it one of the most collectible wines in the world.
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
