Hailing from the Marche region on Italy’s Adriatic coast, this popular recent addition to our drinking list is a big find for us. Sartarelli are making some of the finest Verdicchios in the region. The style here exudes the warmth and ripeness of this temperate climate with plenty of sweet peach fruit but is balanced with a cool lemon and citrus freshness on the finish that helps it to stay very light on its feet. Not a heavyweight but a white that punches way above its weight. We find it a fantastic match for most fish and poultry dishes. If you haven’t tried it we highly recommend that you do.

(List price £167.00 / 12 bottles inc VAT)

100% Sangiovese from our friends the Sesti’s in Montalcino, the Monteleccio is possibly the most rewarding wine that we sell sub £15. In our opinion it has everything that you would want in a drinking wine. Packed full of red cherries, cranberry and plum with subtle herb notes there is a lovely richness to the palate which isn’t excessive at all. The freshness on the finish balances the wine perfectly making it an ideal and versatile match for a wide array of autumnal dishes from game through to most reds meats and cheeses.

VIEWS: Burgundy 2016 En Primeur

As I write our team are currently in the Côtes de Nuits tasting their way through copious cask samples of the soon to be released 2016 vintage in January.

Reports regarding the quality are good to excellent, sadly though, the highly publicised late frosts that swept through the region have put paid to this being a vintage of any sort of volume. Many cellars are looking very empty, in the worst cases, they are down as much as 90% and some cuvées haven’t been made at all. However, other appellations were less affected. We await our allocations with bated breath.
