Roll out the red carpet. Erni Loosen is coming to dinner.


German wine has for some time, totally undeservedly, struggled somewhat in the public perception. This is in spite of its often stunning quality and many passionate advocates within the wine trade, including the brilliant Jancis Robinson. We came relatively late to the cause with our offers of 2006 and 2007 Rieslings, but are now absolute converts.

Erni is as close as the wine trade comes to a celebrity. While the vines had been in the family for around 200 years, it was only after Erni joined the business in 1988 that the Dr Loosen estate really started hitting the high notes and the headlines.

An energetic and charismatic ambassador for German wine in general and Riesling in particular, he has won too many accolades to list them all here. They include Decanter Man of the Year, Wine International White Winemaker of the Year and Wine and Spirit Best German Wine Producer of the Past 25 Years – all well deserved given the spectacular quality of his wines.

The dinner is to be held in the Red Room at Cicada restaurant in Clerkenwell. Part of Will Ricker’s award-winning group of restaurants, the food here is a brilliant match for Erni’s Rieslings. One of my local restaurants and favourite haunts until the combination of moving to Highbury and motherhood changed my dining habits – the chilli salt squid and black cod with sweet miso are to die for.
