A View from the Vineyards: Instalment 2

Spring and budding in the vineyards are always an exciting time for vignerons, but it can be accompanied by an equal amount of stress, namely the fear of frost. Two days after I posted my blog on the 25th March, temperatures dropped and there was a sharp frost the morning of Friday 27th. Nathalie Tollot from Domaine Tollot-Beaut commented that for them it was too early to impact their Pinot Noir vines in Savigny Lès Beaune: “the vines are still in the very early stages of budding and not sufficiently advanced for the frost to have any impact”.

In the world of wine buying, spring is a period that I love. Whilst respecting everything that governments around the world are doing to overcome Covid-19, it has been wonderful to see the most magnificent displays of daffodils and blossom on the precious occasions that we can venture outside. It has certainly helped revive my spirits during these difficult times. On Friday, March 13th, a group of 16 gathered at Crown Wine Cellars in Hong Kong for what was the 13th iteration of this particular fine wine dinner. Bring a Special Bottle Night 2020 experienced a radical shift this year. For the first time since BASBN’s inception, women were invited to join in the fun and games! The three lucky ladies were Debra Meiburg MW, my partner in vinous crimes Sabrina Hosford, General Manager of Summergate HK and myself.
