Many friends ask me whether they should decant a wine before they drink it and in almost every instance, I say yes. There is no particular mystery to decanting. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as to “Gradually pour (wine, port, or another liquid) from one container into another, typically in order to separate out sediment.” And it really is that simple.

For some time now, the Burgundy fine wine market has enjoyed its fair share of the lime light. Whether it be an auction house reporting another record breaking sale or demand frustrated by the vagaries of the latest vintage, Burgundy has seldom been out of the news. However, it is the price increases in the secondary market that have, perhaps, drawn the greatest attention.

After three weeks’ tasting the 2017 vintage in Burgundy I have come back excited and energised. This time last year many of our growers were strangely subdued. While they were thrilled to have some volume after six consecutively small harvests, they couldn’t quite put their finger on an overall style or quality. Twelve months on and their demeanour had changed. There was a spring in their step and many were clearly delighted at the quality of the vintage.
