The Goedhuis biennial Bordeaux tasting is rarely a sedate affair and last night’s event was no exception. Seven hundred guests, nigh on fifty chateaux, numerous owners and winemakers, not to mention an assembly of Goedhuis and Private Reserves staff, and some wonderful suppliers providing welcome sustenance all spread over nine rooms at the Saatchi gallery, the wine and conversation flowed freely and happily. Ch Cos d’Estournel 2ème Cru St Estèphe 2016 | £1,400 IB

Early this Monday morning second growth château Cos d’Estournel has taken the initiative releasing their 2016 early at the same ‘prix de sortie’ as the 2015. It is an exceptional wine, and this is an incredibly exciting start to the en primeur campaign. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc and aged in 60% new oak. 45% of the production made it into the Grand Vin this year. The 2016 is a very pure and elegant Cos, with beautifully fine grained tannins that are hidden by a sea of fresh, bright red and black berry fruits…

Bordeaux 2016 En Primeur: Margaux, St Emilion and Pomerol

Day two of the trip saw the Goedhuis team broaching the different appellations of Margaux, St Emilion and Pomerol. After the highlights of the previous day culminating in a very enjoyable dinner at Chateau Brane Cantenac, conversation at breakfast was a mix of anticipation and expectation: Would the wines of these appellations touch the heights so evident in Pauillac, St Estephe and St Julien?
