The 2004 vintage in Brunello di Montalcino has recently been described by Giacomo Neri of Casanova di Neri in Decanter magazine as “˜the greatest I’ve seen in my life’. The vintage has been rated a 5-star vintage.
Richard Baudains, an Italian specialist, agrees with this and has included Poggio di Sotto’s 2004 in his Best of Brunello 2004 line-up.
“˜Starts delicate on the nose, but gradually opens to sweet perfumed fruit and spice, glacé cherry, strawberry, rose petal and mint tea. Huge concentration and definition of fruit, soft, ripe tannins with earthiness and enormous length. Needs time but will be great. Drink 2012-2020.‘ Decanter Magazine 5 stars
We thought it was pretty good too. “Wonderfully feminine. Piero’s 2004 is perfumed and notably attractive on the nose. On the palate, it is plush, plump and complex with layer-upon-layer of sweet, crunchy morello cherries, raspberries and subtle hints of Tuscan herbs and silky, ultra fine tannins. More Richebourg than Chambertin. Despite its curves, it has underlying power that leads this poised wine to an infinite finish.”
