This is an exciting new addition to our list this year. These vineyards in the Cienega Valley in California have been under vine since 1849. Its mere 20 miles from the Pacific Coast give the region a cooling maritime influence, and its limestone soils are perfect for growing Chardonnay. Fermented in French oak barrels (20% new), its influence is subtle and well-matched by the fruit. A juicy and appetising style of New World Chardonnay with Old World grace.
On the nose, Waller's 2016 Chardonnay is an arresting saline beauty with clearly delineated notes of Thai basil, umami and white peaches. On the palate, it is vibrant with a bracing acidity and a long, clean finish. R. H. Drexel
The resulting 2016 Estate Chardonnay wine shows great focus, epitomizing nature of the Eden Rift Estate. The calcareous, mountain soil. The wind off the Pacific. It is bright and focused, with notes of gala apple, lemon peel, salted-nectarine, white flowers and minerals. On the palate, it shows creamy textures with a racy verve and a lengthy finish.
