Johnny's Favourites

Each quarter one of us will be selecting their top wines for drinking now. As the old timer I have been given the task for this first issue. I am not sure if this is a compliment or a concern amongst the team that my taste buds might not hold up much longer! I have tasted all these wines recently, they are lovely for drinking now and in most cases for many years to come.

Wills Domain, Chardonnay 2007 £135 per case ex-VAT
An unexpected choice for me. In recent blind tastings this has been a revelation. This is a fantastic well balanced wine, perfect now.

Pouilly Fumé, Vinealis, Marc Deschamps 2007 £155 per case ex-VAT
A delicious 2007 that offers incredible freshness but also concentration and power. It is gently oak- aged which gives it just that extra depth of flavour. I think Sauvignon is the perfect wine when trying to recover from Christmas.

Meursault, Meix sous le Château, Domaine Fichet £275 per case ex-VAT
I found it very difficult to choose between the Meursault Village (£230) and the Meix. In the end the extra depth of flavour made me pick the Meix. This is lovely Meursault, perfect now and over the next 12 months.

Ch Lanessan, Haut Medoc 2001 £185 per case ex-VAT
It is said that Ch Lanessan would have been a classed growth if the owners hadn’t been too mean to send in samples for the 1855 Classification. If it was based on this 2001 I am sure that is true. Truly excellent and great value.

Ch Tronquoy Lalande, St Estephe 2005 £195 per case ex-VAT
This isn’t infanticide, it showed beautifully at a recent 2005 tasting. Owned by Ch Montrose, very well made. It will drink till 2015 at least.

Hermitage, Farconnet Selection Jean-Louis Chave £285 per case ex-VAT
Jean-Louis Chave is the star of Hermitage. He is a genius. This is his "negociant" Hermitage, it is fabulous and outstanding value. I can’t recommend this more highly.

Ch Langoa Barton, 3eme Cru St Julien 2002 £320 per case ex-VAT
Tasted blind against a number of similarly priced clarets this was the clear winner. A 90/100 pointer. This is classic Claret.

Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Domaine Serafin 2004 £350 per case ex-VAT
Christian is a great wine maker with a world wide reputation and this is a glorious wine of 1er cru quality. Drinking very well now but will go on getting better. Buy one for this Christmas and one for next year.

Brunello di Montalcino, Castello di Argiano, Sesti 2003 £350 per case ex-VAT
Philosopher, astronomer, fashion guru but first and foremost a great wine maker Giugi is a wonder. The Wine Advocate gives it 92/100 and writes “an elegant, restrained wine that reveals the essence of Sangiovese in its notes of smoke, tar, mint, black cherries and licorice. A feminine, delicate Brunello, it shows very classic color and weight, with well-integrated tannins and lovely poise”.
