Another old man of the wine world, vines have been cultivated in Spain since between 4000 and 3000 BC, but the fortunes of the industry have see-sawed dramatically over the years. There are records of wine being shipped to English ports from Bilbao in the middle of the 13th century and sherry (famously called sack and praised by Shakespeare’s Falstaff) was fashionable at the English court in the 16th century.
There is currently great excitement and dynamism in the Spanish wine industry with some incredibly committed wine-makers investing heavily in vineyard and winery to produce world-class wines. As well as the internationally renowned powerhouse of Rioja, thrilling up and coming areas include Ribera del Duero and Toro, Penedes and Priorat.
Portugal is the home of the famous fortified wine, Port made in the Douro Valley and matured in the cool cellars of Oporto. However, many of the myriad indigenous grape varieties are showing potential for serious red table wines as modern winemaking practices evolve.
