Recently bottled, the 2006 still showed incredible youthfulness in its tightly wound aromatics. But its exoticness, really shined through on the palate delivering toasted spices, sweet leather, dried figs and ripe damson plums. A smattering of Viognier (3%) adds to its complex character. Excellent length.

We were unable to offer this cuvée last year as Stéphane releases it later than his others. Les Grandes Places is his top wine which spends 33 months in oak barrels before being bottled. Plump with lots of upfront fruit, its concentrated, structured palate displays notes of blackberry and granite marking its Côte Brune terroir. A subtle addition of 2-3% of Viognier adds an ethereal lift. Finishes on almond and vanilla notes. Due to its longer ageing, it will be available the same time as his 2006 vintage wines.

The brilliant 2005 Cote Rotie Les Grandes Places (aged in small oak casks for 33 months and co-fermented with 3% Viognier) is a blockbuster. The tannins are very high but velvety. The wine reveals beautiful sweetness in the mid-palate, with a fragrant nose of scorched earth, black cherry and berry fruit, hints of cassis, licorice, and pain grille. It is full-bodied, opulent, but structured and long. This wine should be accessible in 2-3 years and last for 12-15. Stephane Montez is one of the most passionate of the young producers in Cote Rotie, and he makes sensational Condrieu and St.-Joseph as well. His approach to red winemaking is decidedly modern, destemming his entire crop, controlling fermentation temperatures, and for his different cuvees of Cote Rotie, aging them in a combination of 550-liter demi-muids and smaller casks, of which there is a high percentage of new oak, especially for his top cuvee, Les Grandes Places.
