Wines of North America

Despite the fact that wine is now officially produced in all 50 states and in 3 Canadian provinces (British Colombia, Ontario and Quebec), the vast majority of high quality producers lie within the Western states of California, Washington and Oregon as well as New York State. Established by Franciscan Missionaries around 1770, California hails as the longest developed area which today boasts a total of approximately 100 AVAs (America's version of AOC). The most famous AVAs are concentrated around the Napa and Sonoma Valleys though those around Santa Cruz and the more southern Santa Barbara county have become sought after as well. Washington State is most famous for its Bordeaux Blends and Syrah which are produced across various AVAs including Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley and Walla Walla Valley. Many consider the Pinot Noirs from Oregon as the next best thing after those produced in Burgundy. Its most famous vineyard area is the Willamette Valley whose climate considerably more mild that those of either California or Washington State.
