Wines of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Hawke's Bay is situated on the east coast of the north island of New Zealand. It is the driest region in New Zealand and has a wide variety of soils including gravel and clay. These different soil types, coupled with variations in aspect, have meant that many grape varieties have been planted. The region is better known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends, especially the Gimblett Gravels appellation and there are many producers competing with other New Zealand regions for their quality Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs, albeit in a richer, fuller style.
