- A delicate rosé that is light petal pink in colour and succulent on the palate with notes of wild strawberry, lime zest and raspberry. Excellent value for money, it finishes fresh and crisp.
Vin de Pays d'Oc
The Languedoc covers a vast swathe of France from close to the Rhone at Nimes in the east round to Carcassone and Limoux looking up to the foothills of the Pyrenees in the west. Historically a bulk wine area, dominated by the co-operatives, there is an increasing focus on quality. It encompasses many interesting appellations - Pic St Loup, Faugeres, Minervois, inter alia. The regional appellation is used for wines outside these smaller areas or for producers who are not complying with the rules in one way or another. This is often in the choice of non-local grape varieties. A lot of relatively straightforward but delicious Chardonnay is produced and Viognier is enjoying a resurgence. Similarly some exceptional Cabernet based wines, such as Mas de Daumas Gassac, are coming out of this area.
Domaine Begude
Domaine Bégude was purchased by English couple James and Catherine Kinglake in 2003. The estate lies high in the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees in the South of France, near Limoux, a village best known for its sparkling wine, Blanquette de Limoux and terrific Chardonnays. The key to Bégude's excellent balance and freshness is the altitude of the vineyards - this ensures a long cool growing season. This fact, coupled with tiny yields and biodynamic techniques, resulted in grapes of the highest quality.
Pinot Noir
Undeniably capricious, Pinot Noir is known as one of most difficult varieties to grow. Its wines tend to be light in colour and only moderately structured, but can also be highly aromatic and profoundly sensual. When young, they often display fresh raspberry, cherry and/or blackberry flavours, and with a bit of age can develop into the most complex and enthralling wines imaginable. Although it is found in various parts of the world such as California, New Zealand and South Africa, its best results come from the core of Burgundy where it flourishes in its cool climate and predominantly limestone-rich soils and in the exquisite Blanc de Noirs of Champagne.
