Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, April 2009

A new addition to our portfolio, this Sauvignon de Touraine is open and inviting with juicy flavours of peach, mirabelle plum and passion fruit. No cellaring required...just a corkscrew and a bit of a thirst!

Touraine

Extending from Saumur in the west to Blois in the east, spreading out from the Loire and Cher rivers, this large appellation produces white, rose and red wines. Climate and soils very widely throughout the area. Principal grape varieties are Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines can represent outstanding value and the best Sauvignons are "mini-Sancerres".

Domaine Bellevue

Domaine Bellevue makes some of the most exciting and well-made wines at the value end of the price spectrum. The dynamic and creative Patrick Vauvy harvests over 30 hectares of vines with a majority of Sauvignon Blanc. Located above the banks of the Cher river, their soil is predominately sand- based giving their wines a fruit-driven, immediately appealing style. For extra expression on his Sauvignon, Patrick uses 15% skin contact for 12 hours which is then fermented at cooler temperatures with indigenous yeast. Only stainless steel is used for both fermenting and ageing to ensure pure varietal flavours.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc's spiritual home is the Loire Valley, particularly the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly sur Loire. Here the best wines are intense, flinty and regarded as among the world's great whites. Further west the vineyards of Reuilly, Menetou Salon and Quincy make famous Sauvignons. Outside France, Sauvignon Blanc has had massive success in New Zealand particularly in Marlborough, whose grassy, intensely gooseberry and currant wines are enjoying extraordinary popularity.
